Film Chronicles | Meili Snow Mountain

Rediscovering the Timeless Beauty of Yunnan’s Sacred Peaks

By AltayPublished about a year ago 3 min read

While sifting through old files on my computer, I stumbled upon a forgotten treasure—a collection of photographs taken during a trip to Meili Snow Mountain in June 2017. These photos, captured on film, immediately brought back a flood of memories from that journey, a testament to the enduring beauty of Yunnan's sacred peaks.

Meili Snow Mountain, located in the northwest of Yunnan province, is one of the most revered mountains in Tibetan Buddhism. It is said to be the home of a warrior god, and its highest peak, Kawagebo, stands majestically at 6,740 meters. The mountain range is renowned for its breathtaking scenery, with its snow-capped peaks, deep gorges, and lush forests creating a stunning panorama that captivates all who visit.

In June 2017, armed with my old film camera, I set out on a journey to capture the essence of this mystical place. The adventure began with a long and winding drive through the rugged terrain of Yunnan, each bend in the road revealing new vistas that took my breath away. The anticipation built with every kilometer, knowing that Meili Snow Mountain awaited at the end of our journey.

Arriving in the small village of Feilai, the base for most expeditions to the mountain, I was immediately struck by the tranquility and simplicity of life there. The villagers, predominantly Tibetan, went about their daily routines with a calm and grace that seemed almost otherworldly. Their homes, adorned with colorful prayer flags, stood in stark contrast to the towering peaks in the distance. I took out my camera and began to document the village, capturing the interplay of light and shadow, the vibrant colors, and the serene faces of the people.

The next morning, we set out early to catch the first light hitting the peaks of Meili Snow Mountain. As the sun began to rise, the tips of the mountains were bathed in a golden hue, a sight that filled me with awe and reverence. The air was crisp and clear, and the silence of the early morning was broken only by the distant sounds of nature awakening. I positioned my camera and began to take photos, each click of the shutter capturing a moment of this divine spectacle.

The trek through the surrounding landscape was equally mesmerizing. We hiked through dense forests, crossed crystal-clear streams, and climbed steep paths that offered breathtaking views of the mountain range. Along the way, I continued to take photos, trying to capture the raw beauty of the untouched wilderness. The film seemed to lend an almost ethereal quality to the images, the natural grain adding depth and texture that digital photography often lacks.

One of the most memorable moments of the trip was visiting the Mingyong Glacier, one of the longest glaciers in the world. The glacier descends from the peak of Kawagebo, creating a dramatic and awe-inspiring sight. Standing at the edge of the glacier, I felt a profound sense of the power and majesty of nature. The film photographs from this part of the journey are some of my favorites—images of the stark, icy landscape, juxtaposed against the vibrant blue sky, creating a striking contrast that speaks to the timeless beauty of Meili Snow Mountain.

As I continued to explore the area, I also had the opportunity to visit several Tibetan monasteries nestled in the mountains. These monasteries, with their ancient architecture and rich history, added another layer of depth to my experience. The monks, dressed in their traditional robes, moved with a quiet dignity and peace that was palpable. I was fortunate enough to capture a few candid moments of their daily lives, their serene faces and the tranquil surroundings adding a sense of timelessness to the photographs.

Looking back at these film photographs now, I am reminded not just of the stunning landscapes and the adventure, but of the deeper connection I felt with the place and its people. Meili Snow Mountain is more than just a destination; it is a sacred place that has a profound impact on all who visit. The film photographs, with their rich textures and subtle imperfections, seem to capture the spirit of the place in a way that digital images often cannot.

These images from June 2017 are a cherished part of my collection, a visual diary of a journey that left an indelible mark on my soul. They serve as a reminder of the beauty and majesty of Meili Snow Mountain, and the timeless allure of capturing moments on film.
