The Mysterious Message

A Hidden Secret Beneath the Old Tree

By hesham fawzy mohamedPublished 11 months ago 4 min read

The golden sun painted streaks of orange and pink across the sky as the waves rolled gently onto the shore. The small coastal village had always been quiet, its people living simple lives, untouched by the chaos of the outside world. But for twelve-year-old Adam, the village was a place of endless adventure. He loved wandering along the beach, searching for lost treasures the ocean might have left behind.

That morning, while walking barefoot near the water, his toes struck something hard beneath the wet sand. At first, he thought it was just another piece of driftwood, but as he bent down and dug around it, he realized it was a glass bottle—old and covered in scratches, with a faded cork sealing its contents. His heart pounded as he lifted it, noticing the fragile piece of paper curled up inside.

His fingers trembled with excitement as he pulled out the note. The ink had faded with time, but the words were still readable:

"To whoever finds this message… My name is Elias, and I carry a secret no one knows. If you are reading this, then the truth is buried beneath the old tree in the abandoned house on the hill."

Adam’s breath caught in his throat. He had heard of the abandoned house before—everyone in the village had. It was an old, crumbling mansion that stood alone at the top of the hill, its windows shattered, its walls covered in ivy. Some villagers claimed it was haunted, whispering tales of eerie lights and mysterious noises at night.

But Adam wasn’t afraid of ghost stories. He was curious.

That afternoon, he met up with his best friend, Kareem. "Look what I found," Adam said, handing him the letter.

Kareem’s eyes widened. "Are you serious? You want to go there? That place is cursed!"

"It’s not cursed," Adam insisted. "It’s just an old house. And if there really is something buried there, we have to find out what it is!"

Kareem hesitated, but in the end, curiosity won. "Fine," he sighed. "But if we see anything creepy, we’re running!"

The Journey to the Abandoned House

As the sun began to set, the two boys made their way up the hill. The path was overgrown, the air thick with the scent of damp earth and wildflowers. The house stood in eerie silence, its wooden frame worn down by years of neglect. The wind whistled through the broken windows, making the place feel even more mysterious.

"Let’s find the tree," Adam whispered.

The old oak tree stood tall in the middle of what was once a garden. Its thick roots twisted through the earth like fingers clutching at the ground. Adam and Kareem exchanged a glance before Kareem pulled out the small shovel he had brought.

They began to dig. The soil was loose, damp from the sea air, making their task easier. The deeper they dug, the more Adam’s anticipation grew. Then—

Thud.

Both boys froze.

They had hit something solid. With renewed excitement, they dug faster, clearing the dirt until they revealed an old wooden box, its edges worn and rotting. Adam hesitated only a moment before reaching out and carefully opening it.

Inside, wrapped in cloth, lay a leather-bound journal, some faded photographs, and a small silver locket. Adam’s hands shook as he opened the journal. The first page bore the name of the writer.

Elias Al-Hakim.

His heart pounded as he flipped through the pages. The journal told the story of Elias and his twin brother, Youssef. They had grown up together in the village, inseparable. But one day, their family had been torn apart by a terrible argument—an argument so bitter that Youssef had been sent away, his name erased from the family’s history.

The last entry sent shivers down Adam’s spine:

"If anyone finds this, please remember my brother. No secret should stay buried forever."

Uncovering the Truth

Adam and Kareem rushed back to the village, the journal clutched tightly in Adam’s hands. He burst into his grandfather’s house, breathless and shaking. "Grandpa, you need to see this!"

His grandfather, an old man with wise eyes, took the journal and turned the pages slowly. As he read, his hands trembled. When he reached the photographs inside the box, a deep, sorrowful sigh escaped his lips.

"This is my uncle," he whispered, pointing at the young man in the picture. "I was told he disappeared. No one ever spoke of him again."

Tears welled in his eyes as he looked at Adam. "You’ve uncovered something our family buried for generations."

Over the next few days, with the help of historians and village elders, Adam’s family traced their lost relatives. They discovered that Youssef had been sent to another town, where he built a new life, never knowing that his brother had spent his final years searching for him. Though Youssef had passed away long ago, his children were still alive, unaware of their true heritage.

When the two sides of the family finally met, it was an emotional reunion. The past had been rewritten, the truth finally brought to light after seventy long years.

A New Message for the Future

Days later, Adam returned to the beach, the very spot where he had found the bottle. The waves whispered secrets to the shore as he sat down, staring at the horizon.

Then, he took out a fresh piece of paper and began to write.

"To whoever finds this message… Sometimes, the past holds stories waiting to be discovered. Never stop searching for the truth."

He rolled the paper, placed it inside the bottle, and sealed it shut.

Standing up, he took a deep breath before throwing it back into the sea.

Who knew what mysteries it might carry next?
