Best Artwork by Edvard Munch
Symbolist artist

Norwegian artist Edvard Munch studied at the Royal School of Art and Design in Kristiania. During this period he was much influenced by the Impressionist artists in France.

Anxiety was a painting created by Munch a year after he completed the first version of The Scream. In both paintings the figures are similar, with faces of agony beneath a red sky. In this artwork, the artist wanted to express feelings of despair and heartbreak.

Ashes is an oil-on-canvas that depicts a young couple in a forest setting. From their expressions, the atmosphere is of despair and hopelessness. This was created during the time the artists reflected on such themes as love, anxiety, and despair. The woman is wide-eyed with disheveled hair, and the man is hunched over in dejection. This artwork is also part of his series The Frieze of Life.
The Dance of Life is an artwork that was part of the artist’s project The Frieze of Life. This painting depicts women at various stages of life, among them a virgin dressed in white and a widow dressed in black. There is a woman dressed in red in the middle dancing with a gentleman.

Inger on the Beach is an artwork Munch created when he was in his twenties. The painting depicts his younger sister, Inger, on a summer day at the beach in a small Norwegian port town, Asgardstrand. The artist purchased a house here in 1897 and spent many summers there.

Love and Pain (Vampire) is the name of this artwork, which was given to six paintings depicting the same subjects. In the painting a woman is biting the neck of a man; therefore, there is a reference to a vampire. One version that was completed in 1894 was sold for $38.2 million at an auction in 2008.

Madonna is the name of several versions of the same artwork. It depicts a half-naked woman with a red hat. The artist also referred to this painting as Loving Woman.

Model by the Wicker Chair is one of the many nudes depicted by Munch. In this artwork a naked female is standing next to a wicker chair. She is hanging her head and surrounded by much color in the room she is in.

Puberty is among the most amazing paintings in a frieze the artist created during the 1890s called “The Frieze of Life.” The painting depicts a young girl sitting nude on the edge of her bed. This artwork is similar to one created by Belgian symbolist artist Félicien Rops.

The Scream became one of his most famous paintings and is also one of the most iconic and best-known paintings of the Expressionist movement. The artist created this artwork after taking an afternoon walk and realizing that the clouds he had seen were turning blood red. He heard a scream of nature that was reflected by the agonizing face in the painting. He produced many variations of this artwork using different materials, including oil, pastel, and tempera.

The painting The Sick Child is the name of a group of six paintings depicting the same subject. In this artwork, the artist depicts his older sister, Johanne Sophie, shortly before she died. Her mother is sobbing beside her bed while she suffers from tuberculosis. This was Munch’s favorite sister, so it was a traumatic moment to paint her.

A landscape painting The Yellow Log was one of a series in which wood and logs were the main subjects. At this period the artist felt better and made his artwork more colorful. Among all the other trees is a large and long yellow log.
