The Library of Forgotten Faces

where erased people live on in books

By Muzamil khanPublished 5 months ago 3 min read

In the old, crumbling heart of Eldridge Town, there was a small wooden door almost hidden under a curtain of ivy. Most people didn’t notice it anymore. The world was busy with glowing phone screens and endless scrolling. But Elara noticed.

Elara was a book restorer. Her hands were always smudged with ink, and her mind was full of questions about the past. One rainy afternoon, a loose page from an old book floated past her. She chased it through winding streets until it slipped under that ivy-covered door.

The door creaked open slowly, as if letting out a tired sigh. Elara expected dust and cobwebs. Instead, she stepped into a giant room bathed in warm golden light. Towering bookshelves curved into impossible arches high above her head. There were thick leather-bound books, slim paper volumes, and even shimmering ones that looked like they held pieces of the night sky.

This was no ordinary library it was the Library of Forgotten Faces. Every book here held the story of someone erased from history: people whose names had been wiped away by wars, lies, or simply time. Inside these pages, their lives still breathed.

Elara wandered between the shelves, running her fingers over titles like The Whispering Captain, The Veiled Inventor, and The Lost Ballerina. She stopped in the Biography section and pulled out a worn book called Elias the Dreamweaver.

When she opened it, the pages fluttered and a man’s face appeared in the air kind eyes, silver beard, and a gentle smile.

"Ah… a visitor," he said warmly. "It’s been years since someone opened my book."

Elara stared. "You’re… alive?"

"In a way," Elias chuckled. He told her how, in the 1800s, he had invented machines to capture dreams. But a jealous rival stole his ideas and erased his name from history. In this library, though, his story remained.

She listened for hours as Elias described floating dream-catchers and nights chasing the northern lights. When she finally moved on, she was drawn by soft music to the Fiction Alcove.

There, she found Lirael, the Lost Ballerina. Her book was wrapped in silk that changed colors as Elara touched it. When opened, Lirael herself leaped out a dancer in a swirl of tulle, moving like light and shadow.

"Come, dance with me," she said with a smile. Lirael’s life had been full of applause and love until a jealous patron spread lies that destroyed her career. Now, she danced forever here, her name safe in these pages.

As night fell (though time felt strange inside), Elara met Thorne, the library’s guardian. He wasn’t forgotten he was the one who built this place to save lost stories. But he warned her of the Erasers shadowy creatures born from people’s forgetfulness.

"They will sense you," Thorne said. "And they’ll try to destroy what you’ve seen."

That night, the walls trembled. Black tendrils slid through the cracks, hissing: Forget this place. You don’t belong here. Faces in the books began to fade.

Elara’s heart pounded, but she remembered Elias’s wisdom and Lirael’s strength. She ran to the library’s heart a glowing book called The Book of Remembrance. Thorne had told her it could save the library.

She opened it and shouted, "Remember Elias’s dreams!" Light exploded, weaving dream-catchers that trapped the shadows. "Remember Lirael’s dance!" Fiery pirouettes spun across the room, burning the darkness away.

The Erasers vanished. The library sighed with relief. Thorne’s voice softened. "You’ve given us more time. Take a piece of us into the world."

At dawn, Elara stepped outside, carrying a single glowing page a blueprint for Elias’s dream machine. Back home, she began not just fixing books, but telling forgotten stories to the world. She wrote articles, posted online, and shared the lives she had found.

The library’s door remained, hidden in the ivy, waiting for the next curious soul.

And Elara knew now sometimes, all it takes is one person to open a book and keep a memory alive.
