The Endless Descent

Short story thriller fiction

By Suhail Published about a year ago 2 min read

In the very center of the forgotten city, hidden beneath layers of dust and time, stood a staircase unlike any other. They say that those who dare to climb its steps will find themselves in an infinite loop of ascension, where each step taken may lead either to another stair or, worse, back down to the beginning.

Rumors whispered that those who went into the bowels of the staircase never came out again. Only the bravest of the brave either that, or the most foolish dare attempt to uncover whatever mystery was shrouding this enigmatic structure.

One fateful night, young and curious explorer Sarah stumbled upon the entrance to the staircase. Intrigued by the tales that surrounded it, she made the bold decision to step onto the first stair.

As she mounted, the world seemed to blur and distort around her. Her every step was heard with an uncanny certainty, like the very texture of reality was being twisted and warped.

All meaning fled Time as Sarah went down and down into the labyrinthine staircase. She keeps going up, up, up, and her resolution is tested moment by moment. Gnawing at her heart is fear, yet determination is her way.

And at the hundredth step, a decision presented itself: going any further would mean being stuck eternally in the infinite stairs, and descending meant beginning again. Taking a deep breath, Sarah jumped down from the hundredth stair. The world did a little shudder, and reality itself seemed to quiver at that moment, as if everything had come to a standstill.

And then, as if a veil had been lifted, Sarah found herself standing at the base of the staircase once more. The exit lay before her, beckoning her to freedom. With a sense of relief and accomplishment, Sarah came up from the infinite stairs—forever changed by the experience. Still, the mystery of the staircase went unsolved; its secrets were buried in the minds of those who dared to tread through its infinite expanse. And so, the legend lived on of the endless descent, a chilling reminder of the perils that lurked beneath the surface of the world we thought we knew.
