The city was originally a trading port, with the first settlements established at the mouth of the Ciliwung River as early as the 5th century AD The city's official history began in 1527 when the sultan of Bantam defeated the Portuguese and named it Jayakerta, meaning "Glorious Fortress" in Sundanese.
