
Roses Peder Severin Kroyer
Dutch artist Peder Severin Kroyer was one of the most prominent artists of the Skagen Painters Community in Skagen, northern Jutland, Denmark in the late 19th century. This artwork depicts the artist’s wife Marie Kryer, sitting in a deck chair beneath a large rose bush in the garden of the home they rented. Their family dog Rap is sleeping by her feet. The huge Alba Maxima rosebush dominated the foreground in the painting.
Still Life: Vase with Pink Roses Vincent van Gogh

Dutch Post-Impressionist artist Vincent van Gogh created this painting in 1890 in Saint-Remy, France. At this time the artist was getting ready to leave the asylum at Saint-Remy to travel to the town of Auvers-sur-Oise on the outskirts of Paris. Today this painting can be viewed at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
The Roses of Heliogabalus Lawrence-Alma Tadema

Dutch artist Lawrence-Alma Tadema created this artwork depicting a meal for the young Roman Emperor Elagabalus (203 – 222 AD) It shows perhaps a mythical happening from the Augustan History of the Roman Emperor Elagabalus aka Heliogabalus. The painting shows Elagabalus covering his guests with rose petals released from a fictitious ceiling. 1st Baronet Sir John Aird commissioned the painting in 1888 for 4,000 pounds. Since roses were out of season in the UK the painter imported rose petals from the south of France every week for the four months it took to complete this artwork.
Roses, Convolvulus, Poppies, and Other Flowers in an Urn on a Stone Ledge Rachel Ruysch

Dutch artist Rachel Ruysch completed this artwork in 1680. During the Dutch Golden Age, she was a well-known still-life painter specializing in floral arrangements. Here she depicts an arrangement of roses, convolvulus, poppies, and other flowers in an urn placed on a stone ledge. The detail the artist gave to her paintings attracted many viewers and much praise.
Roses in a Glass Vase Henri Fantin-Latour

French artist Henri Fantin-Latour created this oil painting in 1879. The painting depicts yellow, white, pink, and red roses in a slender glass vase on a wooden table, Lying on the table is a tiny stem with a white rose and two pink buds.
Bouquet of Roses Pierre-Auguste Renoir

French artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir is regarded as one of the most influential Impressionist-era painters. He completed this artwork about 1912 depicting a vase full of roses. His distinctive sweeping brushstrokes infused life into this painting as seen here by the arrangement of the roses and the vividly illuminated vase.
Marie Antoinette with a Rose Elisabeth Vigee Le Brun

French artist Elisabeth Vigee Le Brun was a court painter during the time of Queen Marie Antoinette. The queen commissioned the painter to submit a portrait of herself. To play the queen she wore a chemise copied from the queen’s favorite Parisian fashion seamstress Rose Bertin.
The Soul of the Rose John William Waterhouse

English artist John William Waterhouse completed this artwork in 1908. It depicts a young woman in a long dress enjoying the scent of a pink rose. Waterhouse was known for his pre-Raphaelite style. In this artwork, he has created the woman’s dress and the roses in intricate detail.
Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose John Singer Sargent

American expatriate artist John Singer Sargent created with artwork showing a garden with pink roses, yellow carnations, and white lilies, two children dressed in white are seen with paper lanterns. The two girls in the painting are the daughters of the artist, In the summer of 1885 Sargent spent his time in England. The scene is in a Cotswolds Garden at Farnham House in Broadway.
