Rita's Tragedy: A Heartrending Plea to End Femicide
Igniting #TotalShutdownKE Movement

I write these lines in the reverberating depths of my psyche, a last-ditch appeal resonating through the shadowy passageways. My name is Rita Waeni Mwendo, a name that used to be full of hope but is now lost in the quiet of an unspoken sorrow.
The story fell apart like a tangled web filled with deceptive promises of love. He was a liar disguised in charm who took me to an Airbnb, a location that would witness my world collapsing. I had no idea that the embrace I was looking for would instead become a nightmare's vice hold.
There was an unsaid tension in the air when the door closed behind me. The walls murmured tales of previous victims, but I was too caught up in the romantic illusion to see past their warnings. The space was converted into a theater, and a macabre play about unfulfilled promises was set up on the stage.
The revelation of his actual nature marked the start of his plunge into darkness. A barrage of violence broke out, each blow a vicious brushstroke on the painting that was my life. The world, blissfully innocent, was blissfully unaware of the cries for mercy that resonated in the hollows of that chamber.
He used brutality as a weapon in the dance of shadows, tearing down my resistance. The chamber listened to the assault, the walls taking in the soundless cries of a spirit on the verge of death. My cries for help were answered with the icy stare of a torturer who took pleasure in exploiting my weakness.
The world beyond those four walls was still beating to its own rhythm, oblivious to the symphony of pain within. My body, which was once a haven, turned into a hellish battlefield. Legs ripped apart, pieces of me strewn like ashes in the breeze
The physical mutilation of my body was the ultimate manifestation of this violence. My head was a hideous sacrifice to the water, and the banks of the Kiambu water became its ultimate resting place. Once a symbol of life, the flowing river now held the remains of a life that had been wrongfully taken.
As my soul leaves this world, I beg of you, people, to hear my voiceless plea. Let my story resound across Kenya's communal consciousness. The hashtag #EndFemicideKe calls for action against the darkness that takes the lives of many women. #TotalShutDownKE is a movement for justice that has resonance that goes beyond indifference.
Those who loved me felt strands of anguish clinging to their hearts after my untimely departure. My friends and family had to live with an unfillable hole in my absence, which always put a shadow over their faces. Every tear they shed serves as a moving reminder of the priceless position I formerly held in their hearts. The anguish they felt as they struggled to accept the unfairness of my premature death extended beyond my life and made a lasting impression on everyone who was left behind.
However, don't allow hopelessness be the only one shaping the future in the middle of sorrow. Allow my tale to serve as the impetus for dialogue, breaking down walls of silence, and forcing society to address the ubiquitous threat of femicide. May empathy be the salve that soothes suffering and create a society where every woman's safety and dignity are inalienable..
It's time to face the monsters hiding in the corners of our collective consciousness, Kenya, my dear country. Let my tragedy serve as a catalyst for change, a tipping point that ushers in a time when life is valued for its purity and the violent hands of the past are severed. May the determination of a country be carried by the rivers of Kiambu as they flow, wiping away the stains of injustice and heralding in a new era in which women can walk fearlessly and see their tales unfold in the context of justice and equality.
May my story be a catalyst for change, a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, and a beacon that guides Kenya towards a future where violence against women becomes a relic of the past.
