Life on the Bayou

Diane Millsap: Artist who Captures

By Shirley BelkPublished 12 months ago 2 min read
Moonlight on the Bayou

Before I ever heard of Diane Millsap or even saw her work, this particular painting of hers was what I "saw" when I thought of the life of people South Louisiana Bayou lived...the Cajuns/Creoles. So, this particular picture resonated with me. It was like the artist could see my thoughts.

But to truly understand this painting and these beautiful people, one must understand their rich history and culture. This video is excellent if you would like to learn:

In her painting, Moonlight on the Bayou, Millsap captures the mysterious essence of the swamp. It is a place of dark mystery and unspoken strength that keeps intruders out. But that same bayou forever keeps the people who were once forced out of their own countries safe and united in spirit. That spirit cannot be quenched. It thrives in the murky waters and low hanging moss hanging from the fatherly Cypress trees which line each side of land. And these ingenious people have become one with their environment, spinning beautiful music and delicious cuisine that echo their pasts and promise their futures.
