If you have a blue aura, you've probably been called an empath once or twice

What’s your sign? How about your enneagram type? If you and your two best friends were each members of Donna and the Dynamos from Mamma Mia (2009), which one would you be? In this day and age, these are all questions we might ask someone when trying to get a feel for who they really are. Sometimes, however, you meet someone who just ~exudes~ a certain energy—and you can’t quite put your finger on why. They have a certain… je ne sais quoi, if you will. Luckily, there actually is a word for that: it’s an aura.

According to Steffi Hill, an astrologer, psychic medium, and intuitive energy healer, an aura is the electric magnetic energy field that surrounds you. Or, on a more spiritual level, your soul signature. 'I like to think of it as a vibe check,' says Hill. It's not something you or I can necessarily see, but trust, it is always there—and can explain a lot about your personality.

Ranging all the way through good old ROYGBIV, each colour of the rainbow is associated with a unique aura. And each and every person emanates a colour (or multiple colours) that have their own unique meaning and offer a glimpse into one’s personality and the way they move about the world. If you’re here right now, it’s more than likely that you have recently been told you have a blue aura—either by visiting a professional aura reader or having an aura photograph taken. In that case, here is everything you need to know about what that means for your love life, career, and more.

What does a blue aura mean?

If communication comes naturally to you, you’ve been labeled an empath a time or two, and your intuition is out of this world—you probably have blue in your aura. 'Whenever I see someone with a blue aura, I think of the ocean. They're calming, peaceful, and serene,' says Hill. 'They're often very old souls… they're mostly chill people, and they're not going to ruffle any feathers.'

'For some people, having a blue aura is how they naturally exist, who they are at a soul level,' adds Eileen Lee, an aura reader, photographer, and founder of AURA AURA. These individuals are natural-born communicators.

That said, your aura can change over time. 'For some of us, blue is a period of time that we go through,' says Lee. 'It's periods where we're trying to own our truth a bit more and be more expressive in who we are.'

All in all, whether it’s temporary or permanent, having a blue aura speaks volumes about your character. 'For the most part, [people with blue auras] are here for a soul mission,' says Hill. 'They're healers, helpers, and advocates.'

What chakra is the blue aura linked to?

Every aura colour is also associated with a chakra, or an energy point in your body—and the chakra your aura colour aligns with can say a lot about you. Red, warmer hues are typically associated with your toes, and staying grounded. Cooler, violet hues, on the other hand, are linked to the crown of your head, which signifies wisdom. Indigo represents your third eye chakra, can be look at as your imagination and intuition.

Blue auras relate to the throat chakra, 'which is all about self-expression and communication,' explains Lee.

'Vulnerability and shame are both within the throat chakra or blue realm,' Lee adds, as are honesty and authenticity. Therefore, owning their vulnerability and being able to express themself is of the utmost importance to someone with a blue aura.

The association between communication and the throat chakra will play a major role in blue aura folks' lives—not just in terms of sticking up for themselves, but for the greater good. 'A lot of times, blue feels the need to talk on behalf of people that can’t,' says Hill. 'You’ll find blues are naturally advocating [for others] even though they sometimes don't like to be in the spotlight.'

But wait, there’s more! Because of how empathetic you are, you're highly susceptible to accidentally taking on other people’s energies, especially out in public and in large crowds. 'Blue's natural state is to be calm, serene, and in its essence,' explains Hill. 'But if they go out into the world and they're not spiritually protected, they will be bombarded with [other aura colours].'

Sometimes, this can be draining. Hill notes that blue aura folks should be sure to protect themselves energetically, because 'they feel emotions very deeply.'
