Hope in the Midst of Struggles: Are We Moving From Here Toward Tomorrow?

The overall situation of an Afghan refugee whose case is still pending after years of waiting

It’s hard to explain how a person, once full of energy, ambition, and dreams, can slowly become someone else under the weight of circumstances. I remember the days when I used to write stories and news reports with passion, with hope that maybe my words would spark change or at least inform the world about the truth.

But displacement takes more than just your address—it drains your peace, your plans, your identity. As an Afghan journalist in Pakistan, it’s been more than two years that I’ve lived with uncertainty. Without legal protection, without a stable income, and with responsibilities growing heavier by the day.

I live not just for myself, but for my wife and my two young children—a son and a daughter. They are my strength, my purpose, and my biggest concern. Every night, I look at them sleeping and wonder what kind of future I can offer them in a world that seems to have no place for us.

Recently, I was faced with a difficult decision. I had made a moral commitment to some friends—that we would stick together through this rough time. But a rare opportunity came my way. A relative offered me a job that comes with a free place to live and a modest salary. Not much, but enough to survive honorably.

I tried to convince my wife to stay where we are, but she couldn’t see a future in this uncertainty anymore. She was right. At least this new place offers us a roof, food, and the chance to live with dignity.

I know I may disappoint a few people who hoped I’d stay. But at the end of the day, I must stand with my family and do what I can to protect them. Even if it means making painful choices.

Maybe one day, I’ll write again with that same passion. Maybe one day, I’ll tell this story not as a cry for help—but as a memory of how we made it through.
