American Realism artist Thomas Eakins traveled to Paris, France to study art. He chose to created realism paintings. Eakins was also a renowned photographer and became a pioneer of motion photography.
The Agnew Clinic is a follow-up painting to the Gross Clinic. This painting commemorated the American surgeon Dr. David Hayes Agnew, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. This artwork depicts a scene during an operation in a surgical theater.

Miss Amelia Van Buren is a portrait of a beautiful woman. She is one of the artists who studied with Eakins and is described as one of the most talented pupils. Amelia Van Buren studied with the artist at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and became one of Eakins' favorite students.

The Biglin Brothers Racing is another painting by Eakins depicting rowers. The artist enjoyed the sport and created several artworks on this subject. Rowing was a very popular sport in the United States in the 1860s and 1870s. It depicts a race at the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia in the early 1870s, an event that was attended by thousands of spectators. John and Barney Biglin eventually ended up winning this race.

The Concert Singer is a painting depicting the singer Weda Cook and is among the many paintings by the artist depicting Philadelphia natives who were prominent members of their respective fields, including singers and surgeons.

The Gross Clinic is a painting that is also referred to as The Clinic of Dr. Gross. This is one of the most important paintings in American medical history. The artwork depicts Dr. Samuel D. Gross, a pioneer in the field of surgery, teaching a class at the Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The artist was briefly a student there and had witnessed such a class.

Max Schmitt in a Single Scull is also referred to as The Champion Single Sculls. It is a painting that depicts a scene on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. The artwork was completed to commemorate the victory of Max Schmitt, a close friend of Eakins, in a single sculls competition. Schmitt and Eakins attended high school together, and Schmitt was a member of the Pennsylvania Barge Club.

Salutat is a painting with the theme of boxing. In this artwork, a boxer is depicted as waving to the crowd after winning the match. It was inspired by a real boxing match that happened in 1898. The boxer depicted in this painting was a featherweight fighter called Billy “Turkey Point” Smith, a man who fought over 100 matches in a decade-long career. He was also the model of another painting titled “Between Rounds,” which was completed a year later in 1899.

The Swimming Hole is a painting created by Eakins that depicts six nude males swimming in a lake. This artwork is considered to be the best depiction of the nude figure by the artist and a masterpiece of American art.

Wrestlers is the title of three different artworks by Eakins of the same subject. The completed oil painting and an oil sketch are part of the collection of the LA County Museum of Art, while an unfinished version is part of the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The artist started painting scullers on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia and later went on to depict boxers and wrestlers. In 1899, Eakins asked two wrestlers to come to his studio to pose for the this artwork.

The Writing Master is an artwork depicting Eakins’ father, Benjamin Eakins, a professional calligrapher. He was a teacher of penmanship at Friends’ Central School in Philadelphia. This realistic painting depicts the aging man who is copying a document using the traditional copperplate script.
