Superheroes! Witches! Sequels! Not one but two Frankenstein-related films! Welcome to your moviegoing guide to the new year

Goodbye, 2024! You were the year of delayed sequels, disappointing superhero spin-offs, extravagant sci-fi spectacles, and the surprise hit of a witch-themed musical. Now, welcome 2025, a year that promises more sequels (perhaps more timely this time?), larger-than-life sci-fi epics, hopefully more successful superhero spinoffs, and the continuation of that witch musical. If you’re a fan of big-name stars, brace yourself for the likes of Tom Cruise, Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diaz, Ben Affleck, Jason Momoa, Robert Pattinson, Michael B. Jordan, Adam Sandler, and Timothée Chalamet gracing theaters and streaming platforms. For A-list directors, prepare for new releases from Ryan Coogler, Celine Song, Bong Joon-ho, Ari Aster, Paul Thomas Anderson, Guillermo del Toro, Steven Soderbergh, James Cameron, and the Safdie brothers. Of course, the year will also bring plenty of horror, comedy, and biographical dramas.

Here’s a sneak peek at 10 must-see films in 2025. Release dates are subject to change, so stay tuned for updates.

‘Back in Action’ (January 17)
Netflix brings back the early-2000s action-comedy vibe with Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx as a retired CIA couple. Their peaceful life is disrupted when old enemies target their family, forcing them back into action. Diaz is back in action, showing off some serious motorcycle stunts as she takes down bad guys.

‘Companion’ (January 31)
A twist on the typical romance thriller, this film follows a man (Jack Quaid) who takes a woman (Sophie Thatcher) to a secluded getaway, only for things to take a dark turn. From the studio behind The Notebook and the creators of Barbarian, this film promises a lot of suspense, mystery, and an unexpected secret at its core.

‘Love Hurts’ (February 7)
Ke Huy Quan, known for The Goonies and Everything Everywhere All at Once, stars in this action-packed thriller about a small-town realtor whose violent past catches up with him. Now, he must face the consequences of sparing the life of a criminal associate years ago. Expect intense action and sharp fight scenes from the makers of Nobody.

‘Sly Lives!’ (February 13)
Questlove’s documentary offers a deep dive into the life of Sylvester Stewart, also known as Sly Stone, and his groundbreaking band Sly & the Family Stone. The film explores his rise to fame, struggles, and the cultural impact of his music, with a special focus on the challenges faced by Black geniuses in the music industry.

‘Captain America: Brave New World’ (February 14)
The first major MCU release of 2025 picks up where The Falcon and the Winter Soldier left off, with Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) now in the Captain America role. Sam faces a conspiracy involving a super-soldier and an assassination attempt on President Thaddeus Ross, played by Harrison Ford. Expect action, intrigue, and new heroes like Shira Haas and Danny Ramirez.

‘The Gorge’ (February 14)
A U.S. military sniper (Miles Teller) and a mysterious marksman (Anya Taylor-Joy) are tasked with guarding opposite sides of a chasm, referred to as "the door to hell." As they bond from a distance, they uncover the deadly secrets surrounding their assignment in this sci-fi thriller directed by Scott Derrickson.

‘Paddington in Peru’ (February 14)
Paddington Bear is back! This time, he travels to Peru to help his aunt, who’s gone missing while searching for the legendary lost city of El Dorado. With the help of friends like Hugh Bonneville and Antonio Banderas, Paddington embarks on another adventure in this heartwarming sequel.

‘The Monkey’ (February 21)
Based on a Stephen King short story, this horror-thriller revolves around a cursed toy monkey that wreaks havoc whenever it claps its cymbals. As strange and sinister events unfold, Theo James, Tatiana Maslany, and Elijah Wood face the terrifying consequences of this supernatural toy.

‘Mickey 17’ (March 7)
In Bong Joon-ho’s follow-up to Parasite, Robert Pattinson plays a volunteer astronaut sent to colonize an icy planet, only to face repeated deaths and cloning. As he meets versions of himself, an existential crisis emerges. With a stellar supporting cast including Toni Collette and Mark Ruffalo, this film blends dark humor with dystopian sci-fi.

These are just a few of the many exciting films to look forward to in 2025. Keep an eye out for more updates as release dates may change!
