An Unofficial Challenge

First off, I would like to thank all the creative writers who submitted their entries. I would also like to say a huge thank you to all who support me and my works.

There were eighteen wonderful entries into the competition, more than I expected. I must say, everyone of them is enjoyable, each for different reasons and I encourage you to please indulge in them.

Here is a brief break down of the challenge derived from my story : Boil boil toil and trouble:(All entries are linked within it.)

When I first wrote this I had no intention of making this into a challenge, but once I added the title, I had no choice.

The Challenge:

Write a short story 300-600 words -using a famous quote or phrase and interpret it in any way you wish.

Poetry is welcomed- Under 300 words (roughly)

Rule:

Title: Should be the quote.

Subtitle - JBaz Twisted Quote Unofficial Challenge-

Now this is the important Part- I will not be a judge. Judging will be done by two people who have a twisted sense of humor, and who like to laugh, so take that as your hint of what we are looking for. (For some uncanny reason they laugh as one at the same time, at the same things).

Judge 1- Cole, my son. Author, with published books, creator of two board games and an amazing artist. Also, one of the things I may have done right in my life.

Judge 2- Josh, (Whom we consider to be a second son). Author, painter/ artist/ Co-published. A person who I am so happy to have in our life.

They devised a rating score based on three categories:

1- Creativity

2- Transformation/ Interpretation

2- Execution/ Clarity

Listening to these two read the stories was hilarious. They would each read a story at the same time, then debate, score and go on to the next. The discussions were in depth and serious, almost as if they thought they were being paid – Jokes on them, they are only recieving a supper as their payment. (Honestly, they were both blown away with the talent).

Alas, there can only be one over-all winner. $5.00

However, there was a tie for second, so rather than choose one, based on the finest of details, I will award two second place winners. $3.00 (each)

The two second place stories, in alphabetical order:

* Judge 1- - Descriptive, well paced and an excellent understanding of the challenge. Great twist- Great Read:

* Judge 2- A well written story, which keeps the twist building all the way through to the end and comes off darkly humorous. Excellent interpretation.

Andrew C. McDonald- Clothes make the man

* Judge 1- "I love this.' I smiled the whole time and appreciated the unique take on the phrase. Mysterious women = points/ Unexpected guest (Cannot say here)= Points. / The final additional ending, Oh you best believe = Points

* Judge 2- A funny interpretation, and inspired tale. An overall enjoyable read. (Cannot write what else he said, as it will give the ending away, but he laughed).

Donna Fox - See a penny pick it up.

Drum roll please.....

And the Winner of the JBaz Twisted Quote Unofficial Challenge:

* Judge 1- Cleanly written and wonderfully paced. A perfect story for the length that kept me engaged, right to a magical ending that gave me a laugh. A new classic if you ask me.

* Judge 2- This story is written technically perfect, has a great flow, and features a twist that is genuinely a surprise. Best creative interpretation of the quote which made for an interesting read from start to finish.

Laura Pruett- You must be the change you wish to see in the world.

Note From Jason:

Thank you all again for making my day with this challenge. I realize the work and effort that goes into each and everyone. Thank you Vocal for allowing us creators to do these unofficial challenges.

I really loved reading this break down. I love looking inside the minds of people and their process for reading and experiencing poems. Makes me want to rope in some people to help judge mine but alas my kids aren't up for it at the moment. can't wait to go down and read each story.
