Why I Continue To Write On Medium Even Without Gaining Followers
The lessons I learned from talking in an empty room.
Writing online sometimes comes with risks, and one of those risks is that even though you write something - doesn't mean that anyone is going to read it.
I have been on Medium since October 2020, that's three years of on-again and off-again posting.
Sometimes I would be determined to prove that it would only take a bit of hard work - and as all the articles around here seem to say - constant posting.
I would do my best to post continuously, managing to post every day for 60 days before the burn-in would set in again and I wouldn't post for weeks before I found the drive to get back into it and try again.
Sometimes these bursts of constant posting would result in gaining a few more followers, but truly it would only result in no more than 2 or 3 most months.
(I'll just briefly mention that this constant posting never resulted in enough of a payment to even buy a cup of coffee.)
So why do I continue to write on Medium? Why do I continue to post?
I like to equate writing on Medium to standing on a stage and saying a speech in an empty room in a busy building.
Sure there may not be anybody in the room with me when I begin, but the sign on the door - my article title - might just be enough to invite someone in to give me the chance. Then after listening for a few moments they just might pull up a chair and decide to hear me out.
My speech just might have been the exact thing that one person needed to hear because most of the articles I chose to write are things I wish I had learned earlier in my writing journey or are things I am still learning.
When you write there is no such thing as being an expert, there is always more to learn, and there are always ways to improve so in writing these articles I am learning tips and tricks along the way that not only help me but might help someone else along the way.
I may never know what it's like to be a curated writer on Medium and I may never reach a thousand followers, but as long as I am putting information out there that just might be the reason a writer doesn't give up, or that I can help them find the missing piece to finish their story - then I'm going to continue to stand in my empty room, hanging a new sign on the door each day that I can, and hope someone wanders in that I will be able to help.
Just like you.
Thank you for joining me today.
Now go get to writing.
With love,
B. King xo xo

I just sometimes share my posts on Medium but am there as a free member. It is good to have somewhere to write, even if people don't read at least you get your chance to say your piece. Thank you for sharing
