Why Does Your Book Not Sell?

Unpacking the Challenges and Solutions in the Book Market

By Diane L. RichardsonPublished about a year ago 3 min read

It is a dream come true, time and effort to complete a book where every writer desires his or her book to be on the high end of the sale spectrum. There are, however, books that did not even come close to sales projections. One of the most important things to think about in this situation is how to fix the situation in the future: understand why your book does not sell well. This essay discusses the issues that lead to low book sales and puts forward ways that can help you market your book better.

Weak Promotion and Marketing

One of the popularly cited reasons as to why books do not sell is the issue of visibility and recognition. As long as potential readers of the book are not made aware of the existence of a book, there won’t be anybody searching for it. A number of authors, especially the self-published ones, tend to misjudge the importance of effective promotion mechanisms which range from advertising, social networking, book reviews, and even interviewing the authors.

Solution: Learn to promote. Employ a book marketing specialist, if one can afford to do so, and devote oneself to developing the reputation of one’s website and social networks. Another channel to increase your visibility is interacting with readers on in audiences like Goodreads, Instagram, and, Twitter.

Inadequate Coverage of Book Design and Book Description

In marketing terms, a cover is something that attracts people to a product, and in some way is part of the advertisement. Or as the saying goes: people will gladly buy an ugly book if it has an attractive cover on it. And while there is a saying "Don't judge a book by it's cover," it seems everyone does. Those expectations can be critical too! A cover specifically designed for a genre or specific market will keep buyers from the genre or defined marketing. In the same vein, the absence of poor writing in the book review or blurb that does not grab the potential reader's attention may result in a drop in sales as well.

Solution: Go back through your book, front cover accompanied by a resolution to its description. Having an experienced designer and a qualified copywriter convert the first impression of your book completely.

Absence of Feedback

Positive reviews are a type of social confirmation that guarantees would-be readers that the book is of good quality. With few or no notable reviews, a book would be struggling to gain confidence from readers, and especially so for a new or an upcoming writer.

Solution: Explore social media and send emails to readers appealing to them to post reviews on your book. Think about sending out ARCs to reviewers and book bloggers who focus on your niche.

Pricing Issues

For a first-time author, a high priced book can be a deterrent for many readers because it is very likely that the author is yet to establish a reputation. On the other hand, pricing it lower than is expected tends to convey the message that it is a book of low quality.

Solution: Check out the price strategies that other books in the same niche use. You may look for ways of changing your prices or running promos in order to get the right points where your work will be appreciated but not too much to lose it out and there are promo discounts.

Targeting the Wrong Audience

Targeting the right audience for your book is very important because the readers you want to target for your book may never know of its existence if you are marketing to the non-target audience people.

Solution: Have a market to know your audience respect. Use the marketing strategies and prom0otions in ways that the readers you wish to reach will be targeted specifically. Use statistical data from purchasing book sales analytics to improve your targeting strategy.

Lack of Distribution Channels

If your book is not stocked in stores where your potential readers go to shop, it will not sell. Poor distribution may be a great drawback in the sale prospects of your book.

Solution: Try and broaden your distribution channels. For self published authors, try and ensure that your book is offered in many formats eg paperback, ebook, audiobook and in many platforms eg amazon, barnes and noble etc. Explore opportunities with bookstores and libraries to tap into other wide areas such as.

Conclusion

It is not enough to write an exciting book and strive to sell it. An author should have a good marketing plan, figure out the target audience of the book, and make it attractive and easy to read. When making such mistakes, authors in today’s competitive world make it very difficult for their book to succeed.
