The unbreakable bond

Mother's love

By Gouri MurmuPublished 2 years ago 3 min read

Morning at 4:00 AM:

Kathleen stirred from her slumber, roused by the plaintive cries of Shivli's calf. Shivli, her faithful cow, seemed to have an insomniac calf who made it a nightly ritual to disrupt their peaceful sleep. Kathleen muttered in frustration, "This shivli and her calf never lets us sleep in peace. Soon, my own child will be awake because of this racket." She glanced at her son, Jack, nestled contentedly beside his father.

Kathleen stood up and went out. with a lantern and a bucket in her hand, she went straight to shivli and her calf. Untied the rope around the calf's neck. Allow the calf to drink milk for around one minute. It helps in milking. After one minute the calf tied to the rope again. After milking the calf is opened again. The calf rans away to his mother again. If mother's milk is left then he gets it, otherwise not. Same things happens every day.

Carrying the bucket brimming with fresh milk, Kathleen made her daily rounds in the village, delivering milk to her regular customers. Her route always culminated at the grand bungalow atop the hill, where a family was vacationing for the summer. She supplied them with their daily milk.

Upon her arrival at the bungalow, she summoned the guard to open the main door. As it swung open, she entered and called out for Rama, the housekeeper. Rama emerged, carrying a pot to collect the milk. Once the delivery was complete, Kathleen quickly exited, retracing her steps toward her humble abode.

After reaching home, she left the milk bucket and went straight to tie the calf to the rope again. With that done, she lovingly approached her son Jack, who was engrossed in play with his father. Jack's face lit up upon seeing his mother, and Kathleen couldn't resist showering him with kisses, embracing him tightly.

After milking in the evening, the calf is left with his mother for a while. Then kathleen tie the calf again, so that there is more milk for sale the next morning.

The day continued like this.............

One morning, Kathleen had an early appointment at the bungalow as the vacationing family was departing. The task at hand was to tally the accounts and collect payment. Hastening from her bed, she tended to the calf briefly before setting off.

However, this morning, the calf unexpectedly resisted being tied up again, yanking the rope from Kathleen's grasp. As she stumbled over a protruding stone, frustration welled up within her, and she impulsively struck the calf with a stick, denying it access to its mother's milk.

With a bucket of milk in hand, Kathleen hastened along the mountain road, acutely aware of the worsening weather. Ominous black clouds shrouded the sky, and a chilling wind swept through the landscape. Her mission was to complete the milk delivery and return home quickly.

Upon reaching the bungalow, she called for Rama, who arrived with a container. After instructing Rama to collect the payment, Kathleen was summoned inside by the head of the family. She provided a detailed account, and he ventured indoors to retrieve the payment. However, by then, the weather outside had taken a dire turn, with heavy rain pouring down.

Kathleen was gripped with anxiety. How would she make her way home in this relentless downpour? She contemplated her beloved son, Jack, who must have awakened by now, possibly pining for his mother's presence. These thoughts weighed heavily on her.

Hours passed, but the rain showed no signs of abating. Kathleen's yearning for her child intensified. Tears welled up as she felt helpless. Sympathizing with her plight, the family insisted she stay and offered her food. However, she couldn't muster an appetite.

When the rain finally ceased, it was already 2:00 in the afternoon. Kathleen darted out and sprinted homeward, paying little attention to her surroundings or the treacherous stones on her path.

Arriving home, she rushed to her son, who was sleeping peacefully. Tearfully, she cradled him, overwhelmed with emotion. Her husband reassured her that Jack had been fine, playing all day and nourished with cow's milk. Hearing that, kathleen became silent for a while, she quickly put her baby on the bed and ran outside. She went and untied the rope of calf. After being released the calf ran to his mother. The calf started drinking milk and mother started licking him.

As mother and calf reunited, Kathleen watched through teary eyes, her heart filled with an unspoken understanding of the enduring bond between a mother and her child............
