What is a Kasavu Saree?

Originating in the beautiful state of Kerala, this Indian saree is the epitome of refined elegance. The term ‘kasavu’ refers to the golden zari border that is woven onto the beautiful white clothing piece. Crafted exclusively from cotton or cotton silk, this white saree is known for its soft and supple texture, and is one of Kerala’s biggest pride. Kasavu saree is not just a beautiful ethnic sari - it is a pure embodiment of tradition, and grace.

Origins of Kasavu Saree

The roots of the Kerala saree can be traced back to ancient times, when it was the choice of clothing for the royals and elites. With time, it is said to have evolved from a two-piece garment called the Mundum Neriyathum. Because the golden threads were observed as auspicious, the elite section and temples of the state encouraged weaving the zari thread work into the piquant sarees. Thus, this Indian kerala saree cannot be merely termed as some ordinary white or golden sarees but a beautiful blend of white gold sarees. Apart from this, several weaving communities, such as Balaramapuram near Thiruvananthapuram, have also played a significant part in popularizing this Indian saree.

Weaving Process

The weaving process of these elegant sarees is quite complex, so let us simplify it for you:

  1. The yarn undergoes a complicated pre-weaving process. Once that is done, it is soaked in water for five to seven days and stamped on to remove all the dirt and debris.
  2. The yarn is then taken out, and the wrap is made. Then, later, the yarn is stretched in an open area.
  3. Before the wrap is put on the loom for weaving, the artisans starch it and allow it to dry.
  4. After it is completely dried, they then restrarch it and brush it with a comb made out of coconut fibre.
  5. Then the wrap is put on the loom, with added starch so that it doesn’t break on the loom.
  6. After the weaving is done, there is no post weaving process, the fabric is cut and put on shelves.
