Famous landmarks in Africa
Africa is home to some of the most famous landmarks in the world. It’s a continent fully packed with countless natural as well as manmade magical wonders. Even if you decide to tour Africa each year, you still can’t explore all the amazing landmarks found in Africa.
As difficult as it is to narrow down to just a few of Africa's most famous landmarks, here's a list of the landmarks you must include in your itinerary if you are to experience the best of Africa. Because of distance, it might not be possible to explore them all in a single trip. However, this list will always be resourceful every time you think about a trip to Africa.
Victoria Falls
Recognized as one of the Seven Natural Wonders in the universe, Victoria Falls offers an incredibly popular tourist attraction site in Africa. The falls truly offer an unforgettable experience to all its visitors. The reason many travelers come back or encourage their friends and family to visit is to visit the place and experience the excitement themselves.
Victoria Falls may not have won the glory of being the highest or widest waterfall in the world but it is the largest waterfall in the world. This 1708m wide waterfall is located within two National Parks; the Victoria Falls National Park and Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park.
David Livingstone was the first European explorer to witness this magical waterfall back in 1855 and he is the one who named it after the British monarch at the time, Queen Victoria. To date, this fall is still named after the monarch because the locals had so much respect for David that they didn’t see the need to revert its name to the indigenous names.
Mount Kilimanjaro
Mount Kilimanjaro is located in Tanzania, a country in Africa. It is the tallest mountain in Africa and one of the seven summits in the world. It’s precisely the 4th highest summit. This mountain is popular for both experienced and newbie adventures as it’s considered to be the easiest summit. Beginner hikers can enjoy hiking here because they won’t require any special equipment like rope, crampons, ice axe or harness like it would have been the case if they were going to hike Mount Everest, the highest summit in the world.
Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa's tallest peak and the tallest free-standing mountain in the world. The summit is 5,895m above sea level. The mountain lies 205 miles from the equator. Just like other free-standing mountains, Mount Kilimanjaro is a result of volcanic activity. Hikers and nature adventurers enjoy visiting this mountain because the environment is favorable to both young and old. As long as you’re fit, you can climb this mountain regardless of your age.
Fort Jesus
Located in Mombasa City, Kenya, Fort Jesus is a fort built between 1593 and 1596 by King Felipe II of Spain's orders. The main purpose of building the fort was to guard the Old Port of Mombasa. Thus, it was the only fort on the Swahili coast under the protection of the Portuguese.
Throughout its existence, Fort Jesus's maintenance and preservation responsibility has been changed several times but today the responsibility has been solely left to the National Museums of Kenya. Both international and local tourists flock to this historical landmark to explore and create memorable moments about the African continent.
The beauty of Africa
Africa is indeed an epic continent surrounded by gorgeous landmarks. No wonder travelers from all over the world flock to the continent each year just to explore its beauty. Besides, Africa is one of the fewest places in the world with favorable weather conditions throughout the year. So you can plan your visit anytime you deem fit without worrying about the season you've chosen to enjoy your vacation in Africa.
