Tell Me Who You Walk With, and I’ll Tell You Who You Are
This poem belongs to Chapter 2: Latin American Popular Sayings with a Soulful Adaptation. (When your true self is reflected in the company you keep—not by judgment, but through shared frequency and compassion.)

They always told us:
Tell me who you walk with, and I’ll tell you who you are,
as if the soul could be infected
by someone else’s path,
as if crossing steps
could make you lose your way.
But the truth is different.
People misunderstand the saying.
“Tell me who you walk with, and I’ll tell you who you are”
is true—
but only if we speak in terms of frequency.
Because it’s very different
to feel at ease with someone
than to repeat their same mistakes.
You are not what others do.
You are what you hold inside.
You choose your own path,
and those who vibrate like you
choose theirs.
Life doesn’t divide them,
it brings them together,
so they can learn
from each other.
I’ve walked alongside those who carry storms,
because I know life
left them no other choice.
And I’ve loved them—
not for what they did,
but for what I saw in their hearts.
I saw their broken souls—
and yet, still glowing.
So yes,
tell me who you walk with,
and I’ll tell you who you are,
but by how your frequency
resonates with theirs—
not to judge you,
but to remind you
that you too are searching for love,
just like everyone else.
What you attract
is not a copy of what you do,
but a mirror
of what vibrates within you.
And sometimes, the soul leads you
to walk alongside chaos
so you may remember your compassion—
to illuminate what others
dare not face.
So,
if you ever see me walking
with someone you don’t understand,
don’t be quick to judge.
See me for who I am,
for how I listen,
for how I walk with you,
and for how I never look away
from what hurts—
and then,
you’ll truly know who I am.
