My First Attempt at Writing a Novel
Man, I love to read; I just consume words, but just because someone reads a lot doesn't mean they can write well—well, for me anyway. I found that out when I decided to write a novel, “Titan’s Daughter.” It was during those days when the world stood still and we were all trapped at home. Back then, my days transformed into this monotonous blend of TV and even more reading than usual. It was almost as if I were on autopilot, moving from one activity to the next without truly engaging. Until one day, it dawned on me that every show I binge-watched and every book I was consuming was the ripened fruit of someone else’s imagination, someone who took the time to organize their thoughts.

I believe it was the winter of 2006 when I logged on to the family computer. It was a big hunk of a thing and sat on a wooden desk in what was aptly named the computer room. There were other things in there besides the computer – the ironing board, boxes upon boxes of old family videos, and the overall miscellaneous junk that tends to get accumulated over time that doesn’t have anywhere else to go. But it’s the computer room, because that’s the main purpose of it.

The Circus
Blue lines on a white page, I can still see the words in my mind's eye. My fifth-grade English assignment was to write about anything we thought was fun. It had to be, oh horrors, two whole pages long! All weekend I puzzled over this assignment like my life depended on it, trying to come up with ideas. Not able to put it off any longer, on Sunday afternoon I settled in for a session of torture at the kitchen table. With pen in hand, a pack of three-hole notebook paper in front of me, and a dictionary, I began. After writing first page after first page, then crumbling the paper up into balls that I tossed across the kitchen into the trash can, some successfully, some not so much, I finally settled upon the topic, the Circus.
