Some of My Favourites

Sometimes the story just *Goes*, doesn't it? Sometimes, it just pours out effortlessly, and it *works*. Sometimes, you pour all that effort in, and it pays off. This is my little back pat for those moments. A smattering of (what I think are) my all-time best fiction pieces here on Vocal. Come in! And know me better, man!

Some of My Favourites

Here I am, a sparrow on a branch, fluffing up these dull brown feathers. Showing off a little, and why not?

+

The Nevergreens

I wrote this for the Whispering Woods challenge. I wrote six entries for it, ackshually, and one of them even placed! But if you only read one, please do make it this one. I was so pleased with how it turned out.

+

The Phoenix Tree

Here's another tree-y one, but very short! I wanted to do a Kipling style tale. Sometimes the story just Goes. I posted it, forgot about it, and then when I stumbled on it I thought, bloody hell, did I really do that? huh. good for me.

+

Run, Run, As Fast As You Can

I have to include this one, because I think it's the best piece I've ever written on Vocal. Maybe the best one I've ever wrote. You might have already given it a look, in which case, sorry.

+

Ellie Nine One Thousand

I entered this one into a contest elsewhere and they gave it an honourable mention. It's a bit depressing, so you might want to skip it. I was happy with it though. I think I've done a decent job.

+

Can't Beat The House

A nice short creep-fest!

+

Thoughts of a Dead Person

This one stayed with me for days after I wrote it.

+

One Lazy Sunday

Every so often I dip into true crime. I think this might be one of my best efforts at it. It's horrible, but I wrote it matter of fact and emotionless, like the boy who did the killing. I think it worked.

What I Bought At The Market

I liked this idea, and I think I did it justice. It was a good writing day.

+

A Motherless Child

This kid and her mother are completely fake, but by gum did they ever feel real when I was writing them.

+

Flesh and Bone

My biggest fuck-up, if you'll excuse my language.

+

Letters From a Fridge

This one is completely different from almost everything else I've ever written. I was impressed with myself that I managed to convey a lot of detail in fairly few words. The email headers are part of the word count, which gave me fewer words to work with.

+

Ramper Pour Toujours

It is my not-at-all humble opinion that Romance (the genre) is crap, and usually depicts toxic relationships. This is my effort at Romance, and I decided to lean right into the skid.

I included this for one reason: when I recently read it back, I actually laughed. That's terrible isn't it, to laugh at your own joke? I couldn't laugh while I was writing it, editing it, or proof-reading it, and I couldn't laugh right after. I didn't know if it was funny. I hoped it was. It was delightful to read it again after a long pause, and realise, yeah, it kinda was, a bit.

Do You Know Who I Am?

You are frankly fortunate that I don't write a story about this character every damn day. I love her. I love everything about her. I hope I did her some justice. Please enjoy her, at least half as much as I do.

+

Haggard

This one was heartfelt, and for that reason, deserved a spot here. I believe it to be a true story. This is not a story of a magical person. It's a story about an innocent woman, tortured and murdered. There is no twist, no reprieve, no happy ending. It was inspired by this quote:

Who knows why we were taught to fear the witches, and not those who burned them alive

+

25 seconds

I do love a true story! This one is historical, gory, and extremely short:

One of my favourites I've ever written. My baby. Be gentle with this little glass doll of mine.

Great way to highlight some of the pieces you like best. I enjoyed reading all of them so much (and some of them again).

Thanks for sharing your treasures with us, LC. I had already read most of these, but you had three gems that I missed. Thank you also for the offer to read our favorites as well. Since you have already read most of mine, I only have one to share with you. Thank you in advance for reading it! https://shopping-feedback.today/fiction/the-soldier-and-death%3C/span%3E%3C/span%3E%3C/span%3E%3C/a%3E%3C/p%3E%3C/div%3E%3C/div%3E%3C/div%3E%3Cdiv class="css-w4qknv-Replies">

  • I think I've missed 2 or 3 from this list. I'll have to circle back when I'm free to read them. Glass Dolls would be my all time favourite!

This must have been a good reminder about how many brilliant stories you've written. I always enjoyed reading your work before you started this year long challenge, but I think you've taken it to the next level. Great stuff.

It is great to showcase stories of ours we are proud of. Read most of these but not all so I will get on it

I've probably read most of your list since I'm a regular reader of your works and they are all great.

You've been busy, LC! Will save this list and check on those I've not read yet.

I love this idea, and I’m looking forward to going through your list!

  • A great way to group your stories for whatever reason, I do this quite often

What a great idea! Saving this for later so I can deep dive into some Schäfer fiction! And for the money, for the record, for whatever, my two pence is that Glass Dolls is one of my favourite stories I've read, in recent years or maybe even in 44 years? So, take with that what you will!
