Soccer was not a main stream sport in the United States, barely competing with the likes of football, basketball, and baseball. But in the last few years the game has gathered popularity, helped by an influx of new followers and participants. Such an approach turned the sport that was originally considered to be foreign into a part of the American sports discourse.

A great deal in the expansion of soccer is at the grass roots level. Youth leagues in the country are played by millions of players and they that give the children an early attachment to the game. This base has created an generation that not only plays soccer, but also watches professional and international matches.

The Major League Soccer (MLS) has grown in leaps and bounds and now has new teams, modern stadiums and soccer stars all over the world. It has been promoted by soccer stars like David Beckham, Zlatan Ibrahimović and Lionel Messi. Concurrently, the performance of the U.S. women national team has created pride and increased the visibility of the game.
A Sport of The Future
Soccer is first hand and global. To the same effect, as the sport is influencing the culture of Americans, it creates a sense of familiarity and/or connection to the millions of fans of American and diverse backgrounds. Although it might never challenge the Football or even Basketball in terms of dominance, the gradual increase in the popularity of soccer shows that the sport is here to stay.
