Title: Self-Reflection and the Influence of Media Representation

Overview Growing up, I often found myself examining the media environment for echoes of my own experiences, culture, and identity. I didn't see myself on screen until I watched the romantic comedy "The Wedding Party," which is a Nigerian production. My feeling of self and belonging was greatly impacted by this epiphany, which encouraged me to follow my ambitions and validated my experiences.

As a Nigerian university student interested in politics, I often felt invisible in the media. The absence of varied portrayal made me feel disengaged and made me wonder where I fit in. I want to see people who reflected my upbringing, challenges, and goals. I began to question whether my experiences warranted attention because these reflections were missing.

The protagonist's difficulties struck a deep chord with me. Her interest in politics, cultural upbringing, and need for self-expression were all reflections of my own. I felt acknowledged, listened, and validated for the first time. This epiphany made me feel like I belonged and connected, letting me know that I wasn't alone.

This encounter significantly affected my feeling of;

- Self and community validation: I felt respectable and deserving of attention when I saw myself on film.
- Confidence boost: Knowing I wasn't alone made me feel more secure in who I am.
- Sense of community: I made connections with people who had gone through comparable things.
- Inspiration: The film encouraged me to follow my passion for politics.

In summary, A pivotal event occurred when I realised I was portrayed in "The Wedding Party". It served as a reminder of the worth and merit of my experiences, culture, and passions. I came to the realisation that my narrative matters and I'm not alone. I learnt from this experience how important it is to have representation in the media and how it may influence how we see ourselves and our role in the world.

This experience has also motivated me to advocate for diverse representation in media, ensuring everyone sees themselves reflected and valued.
