One Word Poem

Some Thought On An Impossible Concept

Introduction

While I am of the opinion that writing is the only art form where to can correct and amend as your work progresses, or even when you thought your work was finished, I do like to create difficult literary situations for me to challenge and overcome.

I wrote this poem about seemingly impossible things

but this is about the concept of the one-word poem and I will write a poem about a one-word poem to close this piece. The music I have included is "One" by U2.

So That One Word Poem

Probably the shortest form of poetry that has been used for Vocal Challenges is the pseudo-haiku which contains just seventeen syllables. I thought that was the definition of a haiku but it isn't, that is senryΕ«, haiku is far more complex and this was pointed out to me by my Japan resident friend, Lee Sei-Macfhearchair, and you can read about what a haiku should contain in my piece here.

The word Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis is seventeen syllables so could be split thus to create a single word senryΕ«

Pneumonoultra

microscopicsilico

volcanoconiosis

Obviously, that is cheating a little as I just searched for a seventeen-syllable word on Google and found this.

The thing is, I see some single words, as almost poetry in themselves because of the feeling that they can engender within ourselves. It may be a concept, a name, a place or anything that stirs those feeling each time you hear, say or write it down.

The word "Rose" could be a name, or make you think of the love interest in James Cameron's film "Titanic", it could be a flower or a colour, I used it as an inspiration for this visual tautogram.

That is a lot more than one word, but one word inspired this and appears in some form or translation on every line.

I saw this meme about poetry and if a single word can do this then that single word is poetry.

An Internet Meme

Poems can be short and long, can rhyme or not, can have a recognised form or be free form. Poetry is art made out of words. It can have any shape that you want, and I have done a few like that.

So I will close this with my poem about a one-word poem but will post it in the Vocal Writers group because this is about writing, even if it is focused on poetry.

Addendum

A number of Vocal Creators have dropped in their one-word poems, if I get enough I intend to put them into a Vocal Poetry post. They are collected here

pneumon...is a mouthful, lol. I certainly would say "Love" is the universal word of all times for all beings. Except psychopaths of course. Thanks for resharing this!

Let there be.. Keep going towards the... Better to ....one candle than sit and curse the darkness. My one word poem is "Light'. I love your idea and creativity in featuring the one-word poem.

  • Awesomeness. Love is definitely the *best* One Word poem. My second choice would be: Laughter.

  • Some wonderful ideas contained there. For me this one word is both a name and gracefully poetic: Scheherazade

  • Mariann Carroll2 years ago

This is very powerful piece of yours. I will live you with my one word poem : Magnetism

  • Rachel Deeming2 years ago

I think if I could choose one word it would be a Welsh one: hiraeth. It is a word that describes longing, nostalgia, yearning and is pretty loaded. Loved your discussion here, Mike and your poem.

  • My one word poem would be 'Red' as it means many different things to me and others as well!

  • "a lung disease caused by breathing in very small pieces of ash or dust" (I had to look it up, but that's pretty much what it sounded like)

    Another great peom Mike!

Nice poem. I'm not gonna try to pronounce that word though. I got a headache just looking at it. 🀣

  • Another fine piece!
