How many times have said I love to read, or I love to write? Probably too many to count honestly. I was called a "nerd" when I was in school. I loved to do schoolwork. I loved (and still love actually) anything that had to do with reading or writing. It was a treat when I got to do both! I know. With all that being said, I have been writing for a long time. I say that a lot here too, lol. What was my first piece? Well, which first are we talking about exactly? Do you mean my first poem? Perhaps, we are talking about my first short story. Maybe my first published work. I do suppose though, if either of those things are what was meant, it would have been specifically stated, right? So, my first work ever it is! That really takes me back. I started seriously writing in high school. I mostly wrote poetry then. The poems I would write were all based on my life events and situations. Whatever I was going through or feeling in that moment went into a poem. I saved them all. I have a box that I keep them in. I go back to read them from time to time. It is such a stroll down memory lane. Not all the memories are good though. Some of the poems are painful. Some poems are sad, others are angry. I wish I had dated them all. Only some have a date. Since I wrote them though, I immediately know the situation that was occurring during whatever poem I am reading: break-ups, friend fights, drama from school or work. I have come a long way. When I say that, I mean I have come a long way mentally, physically, emotionally and as a writer.

Greetings, I'm Doaa, and today let's delve into the fascinating realm of time perception and the intricate web of illusions that shape our understanding of the past, present, and future. Have you ever pondered whether the past can truly be relived? It's like my beard—sure, it'll grow back, but not the same beard, not on the same person. It'll grace a slightly older, different Michael. However, the bearded Michael of the past persists in our memories and historical records, like images and videos. Here I am, the slightly older, evolved Michael, boasting a 130-day difference from that earlier version. Remarkable, isn't it? 130 days that feel like they've evaporated into thin air. Just as optical illusions warp our visual perception, temporal illusions distort our sense of time. Some are subtle, like the agonizingly slow minutes in a queue versus the rapid passage of an entire day spent with friends. Others cut deeper, like the uncanny realism of old recordings or the stealthy march of time itself. Have you ever noticed that songs I loved as a child are now as distant to new generations as the classics were when I was born? It's a puzzling twist of temporal reality—am I genuinely part of the "older" crowd?

My first piece? I couldn't remember it off hand, so I dug up my old journals to try and figure it out. What I found was a small poem from my early teen years. I hadn't tried poetry or much of any writing by that time, so I made this one as a challenge to myself to try anyway. I've never received extensive education on proper poetry, and I knew even less at the time of writing it, so that's exactly what I wrote about: what I didn't know.

I was in despair. I was quite a long way in to researching Chief Engineer, my biography of Washington Roebling, builder of the Brooklyn Bridge. It was a big undertaking: I had to learn about, and gather material on... oh, let's see, shall we? 19th century engineering. The Civil War. The history of immigration to the United States from Europe. Iron and steel manufacture. The history of women's education. I could go on — you get the idea. Now, bear in mind too: I'd written a few books, but nothing on this scale, and the question of how I would organize and order my material was starting to give me sleepless nights. I had a zillion Word documents which I named and renamed, put in this folder or that folder... yikes. I stared at my screen, my heart pounding.
