I have One Story with Nearly 3000 Views, the Rest are Wallowing in Oblivion

but for how long?

It's not really a surprise to me that only one of my stories is doing well. I have a second story that is in the hundreds of views, but the rest are in the double or single digits.

I have seen this phenomenon many times over the years of writing online. There is even a mathematical law controlling this, and it's called Zipf's Law.

Zipf's law is found all over nature, and all over seemingly unnatural events such as writing statistics.

But like EVERYTHING in the universe, mathematics controls even things that seem arbitrary or man-made.

For instance, Zipf's Law also holds true for the population densities of cities by country, and for word usage in every language, even artificial ones.

Zipf's Law is a power law, where the top thing is the most prolific or numerous, going down in a measured way (about 50% less for each successive story view count) with each successive thing. In my article list, this means I have one top story, and the rest go down in views until most of them only have one or zero views.

I suspect your stories have a similar view structure.

But article views are dynamic. Since I recently got a pretty dramatic increase in the views in my top story in a sigle day, I suspect that my second in views will increase accordingling soon, as well as each of the next stories, according to the Zipf's pattern.

How this is possible, I don't have a clue.

But if my story views really do follow Zipf's law, or a similar power law like city populations do, I really should see an increase in my other stories some time in the near future.

I'm waiting to see what happens in the next few days and weeks.

Since my best story is around 3000 views, I expect I will have my second story, or even some other story, possibly a new one, suddenly gain views to reach around 1500.

How this will occur remains a mystery, but there will be some logical reason for the increase in views that will make sense.

I think it is because everything is connected in the Universe. And when You pull one string, everything is pulled along with it.

There is a useful analogy that goes something like this: A fish is in a tak with two cameras focused at two different angles. One person sees one angle, and someone sees another. They think they are two different fish, because they appear different.

I think this is how the universe works too.

It's all a matter of different perspectives on one thing.

What is my popular story about? It doesn't really matter for this article, but you are probably curious by now.

It is an article about the strange history of Cabbage Ptch Kids and chou chou trains. It is pinned now on my profile, for those who are interested in that kind of thing.

But for this article, I am only interested in Zipf's law and power laws, and how they show a connection between everything around us. And within us.

Maybe, because the story recently got all those new views, I was somehow led back here to Vocal so I could write a new story that will reach 1500 views, soon.

I haven't been here for quite a while. Why did I have the sudden desire to come back and start writing again?

Maybe so the Universe will fit together correctly and keep balance. Yes, that's pretty far-fetched, but I kind of believe it.

If you've read this far, you will already know that.
