How to Start Writing Your Spiritually Transformative Story

A guide for spiritual writers

If you’ve had a spiritually transformative experience (STE) or a near-death experience (NDE), you’ve likely felt the soul-level nudge to share your story. But when it comes to actually sitting down and writing, most people ask the same questions: Where do I even begin? What do I include? Who am I to share this?

You are not alone. Writing a spiritually transformative story isn’t just about recording what happened—it’s about honoring the sacredness of the experience, choosing the right words, and allowing it to serve others.

Here’s a practical guide to help you begin:

1. Identify the Core Message of Your Experience

Rather than trying to retell every detail from start to finish, begin with clarity:

What was the biggest transformation that happened to you?

Did your understanding of life after death shift?

Did you meet divine beings or receive guidance?

Did your priorities, values, or identity change?

Write down one sentence that sums up why this experience matters to you now. This will become your story’s foundation.

2. Choose the Right Starting Point

Your story doesn’t have to begin at the exact moment of the experience. You might start with:

The moment your life began to fall apart (setting the stage)

A dream, synchronicity, or physical event that led up to the transformation

The aftermath—how you knew something had changed forever

Start wherever the emotional intensity feels strongest. You can always reorder it later.

3. Use a 3-Part Story Framework

A simple structure helps organize your thoughts and keeps your story engaging. Try this:

Part 1: Before

What was your life like before your experience? What struggles, beliefs, or questions did you carry?

Part 2: The Experience

What happened during your NDE, STE, or awakening? What did you see, feel, hear, or understand?

Part 3: After

How did this change you? What did you struggle with upon returning? How is your life different now?

This structure makes it easier for readers to relate and follow your journey.

4. Don’t Let Perfection Block the Process

You might feel unsure about how to describe something ineffable. That’s okay. Start with your best words—and trust that clarity will come in the rewriting phase.

It’s also common to feel vulnerable when writing spiritual truths. You may fear being judged or misunderstood. The key is to write anyway. Your truth will resonate with those meant to receive it.

5. Use Anchor Points and Reflection Questions

To make your story more powerful and accessible, include moments where the reader can pause and reflect. For example:

“At this point, I didn’t know my entire view of reality was about to change…”

“Looking back, I see how my soul was preparing me all along.”

You can also include questions like:

Have you ever had a moment where time seemed to stop?

What’s the most mysterious thing that’s ever happened to you?

These anchors help your reader not just read your story—but feel it.

6. Revisit Your Journal or Voice Notes

If you journaled, recorded dreams, or documented anything close to the time of your experience, revisit it. Often, our most raw and vivid descriptions come from those early reflections.

If not, don’t worry. Sit quietly, close your eyes, and ask your higher self or guides to help you recall what’s most important for others to hear. Then write from that space.

7. Make Space for the Story to Emerge

Don’t force the process. Your story is alive—it will unfold in layers. Set aside sacred time each week to write, even if it's just for 20 minutes. Be consistent, not perfect.
