Our story today is about a young orphaned girl who lived in a village orphanage near a vast forest. No one knew where she came from, and no one wanted to care for her. She survived on the charity of a few kind-hearted farmers. She couldn’t remember her name or where she was from, so the villagers called her Claire.
Though some villagers were kind, others were not as compassionate. One sunny day, while the children played in the village streets, Claire decided to speak to the only creatures that had never been cruel to her—the stray cats and dogs of the village.
Ashley (mocking): Haha, look at her, talking to cats and dogs. Even they seem confused. You know they won’t talk back, right?
James: Leave her alone, Ashley. She hasn’t done anything to you.
Ashley: Whatever. I’m heading to the forest to play. Are you coming?
James wasn’t like the other boys in the village. He was kind and wanted to play in the forest, but he didn’t want to leave Claire behind either.
James: Claire, would you like to come to the forest with us? I promise I won’t let him bother you.
Claire: Alright, I’ll come if you’re going, James.
The children ran into the forest to play, but it wasn’t long before Ashley started teasing Claire again.
Ashley: What are the birds saying, animal girl? Do you think they’re wondering how a loser like you ended up with someone as awesome as me?
Claire: Actually, they’re wondering who’s going to poop on your head first.
Ashley: What did you say, Queen of the Losers? Nobody in the village wants you around, and you know it. I could leave you here in the forest, and no one would care.
As he said this, Ashley shoved Claire into some nearby bushes. He was about to continue his torment when James grabbed his arm to stop him.
James: Leave her alone! Why do you keep picking on her? She’s never done anything to you.
Before James could finish his sentence, Ashley’s attention was drawn to something colorful and beautiful emerging from the bushes where Claire had fallen. As he approached, he saw that the object was the hilt of a sword embedded in a rock on the ground.
Ashley: I’ll deal with you later, James. This sword is amazing! Only the most awesome person here can pull it out.
Ashley grabbed the sword and pulled with all his might. Nothing happened. The sword remained stuck in the ground. He pulled harder and harder, but his hand slipped off the hilt, and he fell flat on his back.
Claire (laughing): Looks like you’re not the most awesome person here after all.
Ashley: Shut up! Do you want me to bury you next to this sword? Would that be fun?
Ashley advanced toward Claire, who backed away to avoid him. As she did, her hand brushed against the hilt of the sword. A brilliant light filled the forest. Claire’s hand, guided by an unseen force, gripped the hilt and pulled the sword from the ground. Though there were only three children in the forest, James was sure he heard the sound of trumpets as Claire was lifted into the air. His eyes widened as Claire began to transform. Her hair grew longer and changed color. Her clothes shifted into a suit of iron armor. When she descended back to the ground, Ashley scrambled to his feet and ran away in terror.
Ashley (running away): Forget this! I’m not waiting around for her to chop off my head. Help!
James: Claire? Is that you? What’s happening?!
