Better Alone Than in Bad Company
This poem belongs to Chapter 2: Latin American Popular Sayings with a Soulful Adaptation. (When solitude becomes the path to rediscover your true self and find peace beyond the noise.)

There was a time when I surrounded myself with many names,
many borrowed laughs,
many “I love you’s” with expiration dates.
I thought it was love.
I thought it was company.
But it was just a room full of shadows,
waiting for me to fall so they’d have something to talk about.
They hugged me while I was giving.
But when there was nothing left to give,
they left without saying a word.
That’s when I understood:
some company empties you more than solitude.
So I stayed alone.
And in the silence, I found
my true self.
I saw my wounds without filters.
I saw my gifts without anyone dimming them.
I saw my purposes without interruptions.
It’s not easy. At first, the contrast hurts:
having everything one day, and nothing the next.
When you serve others, you feel complete.
But you return home and feel empty.
Then you realize that everything you lost
was just noise.
And what you gained
is the true echo of your soul.
Now I know solitude is not absence.
It’s clarity.
It’s a clean path,
where every step is yours,
and there are no masks
applauding what you are not.
So yes — better alone.
Because in this solitude, I found what I wanted most:
myself.
I became loyal to me.
And I no longer allow anyone to dim my light.
Because I understood…
better alone than in bad company.
