Be The Niche: YOU Are The Antidote To Market Saturation

"Don't follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail" ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

By Jerrell JohnPublished 2 years ago 14 min read

"There are no new ideas. There are only new ways of making them felt." - Audre Lorde.

The paradox of choice has kept you unable to achieve your goal of building an impactful brand.

Upon entering content creation, we're told to pick a niche to maximize profitability. However, over-narrowing our entire brand and focus will lead to indecision (at best).

Though niching down holds truth when referring to products & services, an excessively narrow scope throughout the bulk of your content negatively restricts possibilities.

A diversity of topics connected by a central purpose is what truly keeps us adaptable & unique.

When I first started my online business journey, I laser-focused strictly on money.

I bounced from "hot" niche to "hot" niche, chasing the next wave of hype. Convinced that if I could just crack the code on what was profitable, the cash would start flooding in.

Spoiler alert: it didn't.

The more I chased money, the more disillusioned I became. I struggled to find purpose or meaning in my work.

It all felt so...hollow. And frankly, exhausting.

Until one day when everything suddenly clicked.

I realized I had been going about things completely wrong. I was viewing niche selection through the wrong lens - one rooted solely in profitability rather than purpose and service.

What if niche saturation isn't the real problem?

What if we're simply viewing market viability far too narrowly?

You see, when we fixate on money, scale, or beating the competition, we severely limit the lens through which we interpret possibilities.

We trap ourselves in analysis paralysis, desperately trying to find the magical niche unicorn that guarantees success.

But here's the thing: that unicorn doesn't exist.

Because, at the end of the day, niche viability isn't determined by analytics, trends, or gurus promising overnight success.

It's not about beating the competition. It's about serving your community authentically in a way only YOU can.

Your niche isn't something to find. It's something to nurture & cultivate from within.

It comes from a place far more powerful than profit margins or scale.

That place? Your inner world. Your unique experiences, interests, and perspectives.

Everything changes when you shift from chasing external validation to empowering internal clarity.

THAT is when your zone of genius effortlessly emerges.

And here's the best part: no one can compete with that. Because no one has lived your exact life.

Your differentiated experiences shape how you view the world. And those distinctive insights offer immense value to the right people.

But first, you have to do the self-work to uncover them. The deep exploration and experimentation required to clarify your true northstar.

When I was 18, I couldn't see past my needs & the needs of my (limited) inner circle. What I'm suggesting requires a radical expansion of empathy & understanding toward yourself & those who would benefit from your perspective.

This is a radical shift in approaches. Not only must we consider ourselves NOW & those we can benefit NOW - but we must take into consideration positive actions taken for the betterment of us (yourself & those you can benefit):

- Tomorrow

- A week from now

- A month from now

- A year from now

- 5 years from now

- etc.

Big-picture & long-term thinking are vital for this radical reframing. We can no longer play favorite myopically to our present selves.

Being able to think & pull various emotions into the present from various timeframes in a way (if done right) that can influence the future is a superpower we're all guilty of taking for granted.

When you make that commitment to personal growth and self-discovery - that's when your niche naturally crystallizes.

The paradox of choice disappears.

Analysis paralysis fades away.

Your life's work isn't about finding some arbitrary niche.

It's about sharing YOUR journey - in all its dynamic color and texture - to move others.

Let YOUR experiences be your content.

Let your discoveries, challenges, breakthroughs, and insights become your competitive advantage.

Stop looking externally to "trends" for niche viability testing.

The ultimate litmus test is far simpler:

"Do I genuinely care about this work? Is this aligned with who I am and want to become - aka, my vision?"

Self-doubt loses its grip.

Confidence blossoms.

Momentum ignites.

Suddenly, you're no longer just creating content.

You're documenting YOUR process of becoming. Building a community around meaningful work only YOU can pioneering.

Work that electrifies, fulfills, and expands you from the inside out.

So let me ask you:

Are you ready to embrace your work as an intimate excavation of self?

To view content creation not as a means to some financial end but as an invitation to explore your deepest fascinations?

If so, then this newsletter is for you.

Together, we'll dive DEEP into the personal shifts required to uncover your niche, reframe confusing external signals, and get clarity from within.

We'll explore the hidden barriers between you and niche alignment, like:

- Self-doubt & imposter syndrome

- Analysis paralysis stemming from too many choices

- Getting distracted by money-making hype promises that leave you feeling empty

- Comparisons that crush creativity and kill confidence

- People-pleasing instead of purpose/passion-honoring

Most importantly, we'll demystify the steps to embracing YOU as your niche so you can finally create that soul-stirring work only you can pioneer.

This will be a masterclass in remembering who you were before the world told you who to be.

Distinction Between Business & Brand

Let's touch on a key distinction critical to this entire discourse:

The distinction between business and brand.

These two terms get conflated constantly, yet they represent two radically distinct motivational frameworks and value creation models.

Failing to distinguish them is exactly what left me disheartened and disillusioned for an extended period - chasing money in niches utterly misaligned with who I am.

At its core, a business represents a transactional exchange of value for money: goods and services are provided in return for cash, plain and simple.

However, a brand - specifically a personal brand driven by a sole creator rather than a faceless corporation - centers on resonating relationships.

Shared identity.

Trust built over time through vulnerability.

Ultimately, a community committed to actualizing shared goals that lead to a vision.

While a business sells products and services, a brand cultivates & nurtures the community.

And it's this distinction - between money-driven exchange vs meaning-rich relatability - that gets obscured all too often.

Creators desperately try to scale transactional business models that completely miss the core human desires for resonance and belongingness.

We assume audience loyalty can be bought when it must be earned through identity, value, & worldview overlaps only your authentic self can reveal.

This is why market viability has less to do with profitability metrics, scale, or beating the competition...

And everything to do with courageously excavating your inner world (self-discovery) so you can connect with your people on a soulful level.

For years, my bottleneck was viewing both as a whole without understanding their distinctions. Initially, clarity on this distinction is essential.

In time, thoughtfully blending business and authentic branding creates a flywheel supercharged by community where products, marketing, and sales flow naturally. Your content will raise your followers' awareness to the point where they understand how your products can benefit their lives.

But first, aligning with your core values and audience is paramount.

Building a business from a foundation of personal brand community strength is totally different from fixating on profit first while crossing your fingers that people eventually resonate and convert.

Emphasis on the foundation you're building on.

That's the core of what we're discussing here. Building with the foundation being branding principles will produce radically different results & require a radically different process than building with the foundation being business principles.

Take the nuance. Leave what doesn't resonate.

Extrinsic Vs. Intrinsic

In today's increasingly attention-focused economy, people crave realness and soulful nourishment like never before.

They want to witness unpacked, unfiltered journeys that mirror their struggles.

Not perfection or platitudes. Not tactical tips devoid of humanity.

But mutual personal evolution in all its messy, nonlinear glory.

"Set a goal.

Find a problem.

Learn how to solve it.

Document how you solved it.

Distill into a replicable process.

Give it to others that want to be helped.

Do it offline, and it's called growth.

Do it online, and it's called business. ~ Dan Koe"

THAT is where niche content lives.

In courageously exploring areas others deem too "weird," "scary," or " taboo." The areas that interest you.

The parts of the maturing process no one publicly celebrates.

Where you feel most alone yet know others likely suffer silently, too.

When you spotlight those areas with creative courage rather than cringe...

You build community through shared vulnerability.

And community generates conversion more organically and loyally than any amount of aggressive upselling ever could.

So, if your goal is to build a thriving business...

Start with nurturing the personal brand community heartbeat.

Let THAT direct and shape the commercial aspects rather than vice versa.

Otherwise, you end up creating more distracting white noise rather than a meaningful connection.

That's the crucial distinction between business and brand positioning from a zoomed-out (big-picture) perspective.

Now, let's get more intimate...

And talk about motivational sources powering each pathway.

Specifically, extrinsic vs intrinsic drivers fueling our work.

Just like mistaking businesses for brands sets us up for disconnection...

Trying to scale offerings rooted solely in extrinsic motivators rather than intrinsic passions is equally problematic.

What do I mean by extrinsic and intrinsic?

Extrinsic motivation is fueled by external rewards: more money, more clout, more praise, and validation from others.

The work itself isn't fulfilled for purpose or pleasure - but for what it can GET you.

Usually, from people you don't have an authentic heart connection to.

Whereas intrinsic motivation comes from within.

It's the sheer joy and curiosity in the work itself. The drive to get better for YOU - not for any outside applause or incentive.

We all contain a unique mixture of both motivators.

However, problematic patterns emerge when extrinsic motivators around profitability and scale override intrinsic drivers of purpose and self-actualization.

Especially for creators just getting started...

- You see the flashy success of others making millions and assume that must be the path.

- Force yourself into niches purely for money despite feeling no authentic resonance.

- Burn yourself out producing content around topics that don't actually excite you.

- All in hopes of getting the external rewards like fame, wealth, and status you assume success requires.

- And disillusionment sinks in when those rewards don't instantly gratify like expected.

"Success is the progressive realization of a worthy ideal ~ Earl Nightingale."

So, let me be transparent with you about my own journey here...

When I first started creating content around personal development...

My motivation was almost entirely profit and platform-driven.

I just wanted to get big like my inspirations, who had thousands of followers.

To sell courses and scale income faster.

But the more I fixated on monetization models and metrics...

The more empty I felt. Unfulfilled. Like a sell-out and a fraud.

While I was talking about purpose and authenticity externally,

My internal creative process kept getting dragged further from my truth.

What started as genuine excitement morphed into weariness and resentment.

Resentment whenever I sat down to write yet ANOTHER piece of content that didn't actually connect to my personal growth at that moment.

Just going through the promotional motions. Saying what I thought would sell rather than sharing vulnerable excavations.

And it absolutely crushed my inspiration.

Made me want to give up altogether.

Until one day, during a walk, it hit me...

What if instead of trying to force myself into trendy niches and money-making models just to keep up...

I fully surrendered to my intrinsic motivations and sense of purpose again?

This was when the idea of sustainability being a high priority when creating systems was introduced to me.

What if I allowed myself to create ONLY around the topics intrinsically meaningful to me, even if they didn't seem conventionally popular?

That felt terrifying. And liberating.

Suddenly, my niche struggles (what to create content on/about) faded away because my entire LENS shifted.

My gaze turned inward to explore my own curiosity.

Asking, "What unique problems or revelations demand my creative filter at this moment?"

Talk about an antidote to paralysis!

As the saying goes...

Your vibe attracts your tribe.

Intrinsic motivation generates WAY more magnetic energy than extrinsic ever could.

So, in many ways, the distinction between business and brand...

Extrinsic and intrinsic drive sources...

Comes down to energy dynamics in the end.

What kind of fuel are you metabolizing and emanating out into the world?

How does that fuel cultivate connection, nurture niche community, and catalyze impact?

These aren't just semantics to pull hairs out over.

They represent two radically distinct creative pathways and relationship models.

That's a high-level overview of the key conceptual cornerstones we'll unpack together in this newsletter journey...

- Differentiating business from brand

- Detailing extrinsic vs intrinsic drive sources fueling our work

And why putting these distinctions, FIRST uplifts everything that follows after...

Including discovering your niche community and creating resonant content that only you can pioneer.

So, with this framing in mind, evolving your motivational lens and value offering discernment...

Let's get into the nitty gritty of turning YOUR lived experience into niche content gold.

Your Experiences Become Your Content

You've likely heard the saying, "Your life is your message." But when it comes to niche content creation, we often overlook the goldmine hidden in plain sight:

Our own lived experiences.

It's tempting to believe that only recognized "experts" with lofty credentials or viral platforms have valuable perspectives worth sharing.

That somehow, despite living through a unique set of circumstances...

Your observations, challenges, and insights aren't "special" enough to offer real value.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

While credentials may denote skill acquisition, they tell us little about applied life wisdom.

What people crave is more humanity. More vulnerability. More people willing to openly be an imperfect work-in-progress.

As Brene Brown famously said:

"People don't learn from perfection. People learn from imperfections."

And your "imperfect" experiences are the gateway to relatable content gold.

The more niche and intimate your observations, the more hungry your ideal audience becomes.

Specificity fosters community in a sea of generic white noise.

It says, "Hey - over here! I see you. I've been there too."

We all have something valuable to offer from excavating our inner landscape.

But first, we have to get radically honest with ourselves.

To trace back the invisible threads connecting our choices and perceptions over time.

Only then can we extract the universal principles embedded within our subjective experiences.

So, how do you start mining your life events for niche gold?

It begins with lifting the hood on your personal evolution engine.

Tracking cause and effect patterns over time.

Specifically, identifying the problems you've solved that led to personal breakthroughs and clarity.

Then, extract the methods so others can reproduce your growth.

For example, I recently overcame the struggle with time management and productivity.

Procrastination was my nemesis.

One day, I decided enough was enough.

I had to fix this if I was serious about bringing my vision to life.

So I experimented relentlessly.

Tested different frameworks for scheduling priorities.

Analyzed my energy fluctuation patterns throughout the day.

Iterated new systems for balancing workflow and timing.

Through repeated trial-and-error, I discovered a personalized approach that finally lifted my productivity.

At first glance, solving a common weakness like procrastination might not seem particularly unique or compelling.

But when you unpack the step-by-step details...

Translate your methodology into a repeatable framework based on your lifestyle constraints, psychology, & central purpose...

It becomes a valuable instrument others could apply directly to their own lives.

What began uniquely personal quickly rippled out as universally practical.

Are you starting to see how this works?

Your obstacles and their solutions become content gold when you frame them as tools your people can use rather than just empty anecdotes.

Let's explore another example...

Earlier in my business journey, I found myself riddled with constant self-doubt.

That insidious inner voice insisting, "I'm no good at this," and "How is this supposed to work?"

If I wanted to step into my zone of genius and serve at higher levels, I had to heal this limiting belief pattern.

So, I made it my mission to rewrite those disempowering inner scripts.

It took conscious mental reconditioning, journaling, emotional excavation work, and embodied practices like breathwork and meditation.

But finally, the fog of self-sabotage and courage crumbling cleared.

My sense of capability and confidence radically shifted.

Do you notice the pattern here?

It always links back to solving your diverse challenges and extracting value bundled within so others can apply it to level up their lives.

Maybe you've unlocked novel productivity frameworks that help you balance passion projects with work-life demands.

Or you've discovered communication methods to improve relationships and avoid conflict.

Or you've developed morning rituals that keep you grounded and committed through external chaos.

Whatever your distinct challenges and victories...

When framed as instructive tools, they transform into resonant content.

Your experiences become your content.

Now I know what some of you might be thinking...

"Sure, solving my superficial problems is great, but how do I determine the meaningful niche topics aligned with my purpose and zone of genius? The content I'm truly here to make?"

Here's the deal...

The more you clear your plate of "surface-level" obstacles, the quicker your next layer of meaningfully impactful opportunities will rise for consideration.

It goes back to foundations determining capacities.

You must walk before you can run, and you must solve basic dilemmas before successfully tackling advanced ones.

Which means setting priorities and ascending a "hierarchy of needs" style progression.

Resolving lower-priority issues builds capacity, knowledge, and self-trust to handle bigger ticket items.

Sort of like leveling up in a game.

Taking on the final boss missions without sufficient grinding through earlier levels is foolishly dangerous.

But methodically clearing stages equips you with all the gear, intel, and skill required to win.

The same goes for niche content creation.

Lean into this progression mindfully in your own journey, my friend.

Start by identifying your "lower level" unresolved issues demanding your focus NOW...

Obstacles currently wasting mental bandwidth and throttling your next level impact potential.

These become your priority content pillars.

Bit by bit, extracting and sharing hard-won growth fuels your transformation bandwidth dramatically.

Enabling quicker access to your true zone of genius - that white-hot intersection of your intrinsic motivations, untapped genius, and the world's evolving needs.

So, if you feel overwhelmed or uncertain about where to start...

Come back to the basics with compassionate patience.

Extract lessons from surfaces before diving deeper.

Build your niche content one insight, solution, and liberation at a time.

Let each challenge cracked open guide you to the next layer in your quest for self-discovery.

Then convert that odyssey into roadmaps your people can follow to their own breakthroughs.

Boom! Your experiences become their content.

You Are The Niche

Hopefully, the core message is clear by now: niche viability lives within YOU, not arbitrary external metrics.

When you stop chasing hypothetical audience desire projections and get radically honest with yourself instead...

Your zone of genius effortlessly emerges.

Think of it as an excavation of spirit rather than a discovery of some static external pot of gold.

Mining YOUR distinctive experiences...

Leveraging YOUR novel observations and hard-won lessons as creative fodder...

THAT is the antidote to market saturation fears.

Both for confidence in your content's value and clarity on positioning.

Be patient but persistent in excavating your memories, interpretations, and victories.

Extract the principles and transform them into instructive instruments for growth and possibility.

Trust YOU have all the pure gold you need already embedded within your life experience.

It's just waiting to be extracted, refined, and molded into messages that move people.

The world needs your distinctive solutions, stories, and skill sets...not just more homogenous static noise.

The floors open, the stage is set...now come fully into your zone of genius!
