A Cup of Fiction, Mythological Fiction
Good morning my fellow Fiction Enthusiasts. It is a wonderful Friday morning and the beginning of what I hope will be a very productive weekend. May Ponos grant us all ease in our efforts to bring good stories to the world.
I believe that today, we will talk about mythological fiction. These are tales that have or are centered around Gods, Goddesses, or Creatures from the varied mythologies from around the world. Several well-known young adult fiction collections fall squarely into this genre, one being The Percy Jackson Collection by Rick Riordan.
“Lately, mythological monsters and the Olympian gods seem to be walking straight out of the pages of Percy Jackson’s Greek mythology textbook and into his life. Zeus’s master lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect. Percy and his friends have just 10 days to find and return Zeus’s stolen property and bring peace to a warring Mount Olympus.”

In the development of a Mythological Fiction tale, the inclusion of the mythos aspect can be blatant, as it is in the Percy Jackson series, or it can be more subtle. My multi-genre story, In the Silence I Hear (Warning, it is a dark, vigilante justice story), mayhem and murder stuff. I throw in reference to the Muses. Nine goddesses from Greek Mythology as imagined guides to the Protagonist, Fredrick Appelton. If this interests, you check them out here.
In most fiction writing involving world-building, like George RR Martin’s Games of Thrones or George or J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, entirely new mythologies are created. The imagination and creativity needed to do this type of world-building have always amazed and intrigued me. A lovely masterpiece by Joseph Campbell, The Hero With a Thousand Faces, and his many other works help form the fiction story writing format known as the Hero’s Journey. There is a plethora of insights on this story structure and in my humble opinion a topic all fiction writers should have a cursory knowledge of. The selection below is also available from Amazon in digital, audio, and paperback formats. Please check it out.
And now my fovorite part of the Blog.
A Fresh Cup of Fiction
By Krom, enjoy!
Upon the clouds, it rode. The dark-winged creature. It was a speck from the vantage point on the ledge where Aspurnase stood. Far off and above the woods of Elteara, he knew it was large. What was he seeing? Over the next few minutes, it grew until, still far off, its bat-like wings unfeathered, ribbed, and clawed, spanned several hundred feet, were attached to a long, slim body with thick, long legs. Fear prickled his skin.
“Aspurnase, you idiot, hide.” He told himself, too late as the great round red eyes of the flying God were now fixed upon him. Death was uneventful. Aspurnase often wondered what it was that killed him. Alas, there was no one around to ask.
