Ford Mustang: Why This Muscle Car Survived While Others Died
They are still here until now.
The Mustang was the original pony car. That’s why they’re called pony cars. Some versions, like those made by Shelby, are definitely muscle cars. But most Mustangs aren’t muscle cars. Even today, the Mustang is still a top contender in the pony car segment. It’s a big part of Ford’s identity, and it’s one of the first cars that comes to mind when you think of Ford.
I think the demand for Mustang is still high and Ford itself is quite successful in maintaining Mustang as their product line. I mean, until now, Ford didn’t seem to make another line in their product for their muscle cars. Besides Mustang, what other pony cars do they have? Some will say Falcon but even though they are siblings, Mustang is more famous. That’s why, until now, Mustang is still popular.
And they (until now) haven’t deviated too much from the beginning; the Mustang from the past until now still carries muscle DNA in itself, even though maybe in the 1980s it all changed a bit, but still, the Mustang is still popular because it is a car that is true to itself. Ford didn’t make many changes to it, even though maybe some people don’t agree with the Mustang Mach-E, but we can’t do anything about that.
A lot of people still like and believe in the Mustang because it hasn’t strayed too far from its roots. The brand has stayed pretty true to itself, and that matters to fans. Of course, we’re not talking about the ‘80s era, when the Mustang lost a lot of its power and popularity—but to be fair, almost all American cars took a hit back then. Emissions regulations and other stuff were mostly to blame.
The Mustang name still means something to a lot of people. It’s the muscle car most folks think of first, especially because it’s popped up in so many movies and other pop culture stuff. It’s just one of those cars people remember.

In addition, there are not many pony car versions; Dodge has the Challenger, while Chevrolet has Camaro but Dodge itself seems to have given up on it in the hands of Stellantis so now there are only Chevrolet and Ford that still fill the pony car segment. I suppose there are still consumers who want it so the car is still sold. If demand decreases, Ford will definitely not continue the Mustang.
Ford some time ago decided to keep the Mustang and stop other cars that were not selling well, which was quite surprising for many people, but indirectly, this is a statement that many people still want the Mustang so Ford doesn’t want to stop production; they could have stopped it if it wasn’t sold.
But I think the Mustang is still selling because of its cult following; basically, it is the most popular pony car there is and Ford wants to maintain its design and features until now. The same thing you can see with the Chevrolet Camaro, even though they finally lost and stopped production in 2024, so only the Mustang is left in the pony car class and because Ford has no competitors, maybe the Mustang will stay a bit longer.
This is a method that many car manufacturers can imitate. Make a car that doesn’t change much and make sure you listen to what the consumer wants and that’s the reason the Mustang is still around; if Ford had deviated too much from the Mustang, it might not have sold as well, but people would still buy it because it’s a Mustang.
The Mustang will still be around, at least for the next few decades, it is one of the American icons that still endures these days.
