Think the Maldives is just white sand and turquoise waters? You're quite wrong if you think that. Beneath the surface (and even above it), the Maldives is teeming with extraordinary wildlife, from colourful coral gardens to elusive marine giants. Whether you’re a snorkeller, diver, or just here out of sheer curiosity, here’s what you could encounter in this tropical paradise.

Coral Reefs Alive with Colour

The Maldivian coral reefs are some of the most spectacular in the world. Home to over 2,000 species of fish, expect to spot clownfish, parrotfish, and butterflyfish darting between technicolour corals. The reefs themselves are living organisms, creating a dazzling underwater landscape.

Majestic Manta Rays

Graceful and enormous, manta rays are a must-see. Hanifaru Bay is one of the best spots globally to witness these gentle giants as they gather in huge numbers to feed on plankton. Swimming alongside them is nothing short of magical.

Sea Turtles Gliding By

Five of the world’s seven sea turtle species can be found in the Maldives. Most commonly, you’ll see green and hawksbill turtles peacefully gliding past coral formations. If you're staying at a family villa in Maldives, you can request organised turtle-watching excursions. It is quite a popular activity among families.

Sharks in the Shallows

Don’t panic! Reef sharks are common in the Maldives and are typically harmless. Blacktip reef sharks are often seen in shallow waters, especially near sandbanks and lagoons. Watching them glide by is a thrilling highlight of any snorkel trip.

Rare Birds and Island Wildlife

While the marine life steals the show, bird lovers will enjoy spotting species like the white tern and grey heron. The islands are also home to fruit bats and crabs that add charm to your tropical stay.
