Located in northeastern Thailand, Khon Kaen is often overshadowed by its other well-known neighbours, but little do people know that this spot is a fantastic holiday destination. It offers visitors a glimpse of authentic Thai culture with its diverse culinary offerings, rich traditions, and a serene escape from the busier tourist hotspots. Keep reading to learn more!

Isaan Culture

Khon Kaen is the unofficial capital of the Isaan region, the northeastern part of Thailand known for its unique identity. The city is well-known for its traditions that have been passed down through generations. Visitors can experience the lively atmosphere of local festivals such as Phi Ta Khon Ghost Festival, which is a three-day festival that celebrates local culture and spirits.

The local Isaan dialect, music, and dance are integral to daily life here. Tourists will enjoy witnessing a traditional Mor Lam performance, which is a style of folk music accompanied by dance, and is an immersive way to connect with the cultural fabric of the region. Unlike the more popular tourist-oriented shows in major cities, these performances in Khon Kaen feel intimate and deeply rooted in tradition.

Hidden Temples

Khon Kaen features plenty of Buddhist temples, each with unique architectural styles and stories. A must-visit is Wat Nong Wang, which is an iconic nine-storey temple overlooking Kaen Nakhon Lake. It is recommended that tourists climb to the top for stunning panoramic views of the city and an opportunity to admire intricately done murals depicting Buddhist teachings and local folklore.

Just as fascinating is Wat Thung Setthi, a serene temple adorned with golden spires and surrounded by lush greenery. Many of these temples are still active centres of worship, offering visitors a chance to witness authentic religious practices rather than curated and overhyped tourist experiences.

Authentic Isaan Cuisine

Foodies will love nothing more than tucking into the bold, spicy, and tangy flavours of Isaan cuisine. Unlike the internationally known dishes of central Thailand, Isaan food retains its rustic charm. It is recommended that tourists start their culinary journey with som tam (papaya salad), which is a delicious and spicy dish that perfectly balances sweet, sour, and salty flavours. This is best paired with sticky rice and grilled chicken for a traditional meal.

Other must-try dishes are larb, which is a minced meat salad flavoured with roasted rice powder, lime, and herbs. For more foodie adventures and possibly one of the best things to do in Khon Kaen, tourists should consider visiting a street market such as the Ton Tann Market, which offers everything from grilled river fish to yummy desserts. For a more immersive experience, travellers can opt to join a local cooking class to learn the secrets and techniques behind these iconic dishes. Travellers in search of accommodation can opt to book a stay with Avani Khon Kaen Hotel and Convention Centre.

Silk Weaving

Khon Kaen is renowned for its silk production, which is a craft that dates back centuries. At the nearby village of Chonnabot, skilled artisans meticulously weave silk fabrics by hand, creating intricate patterns that reflect the area’s local heritage.

Visitors can watch the weaving process, from dyeing the threads with natural colours to creating elaborate designs. These communities are proud of their craft and eager to share their skills with outsiders. Buying a piece of silk directly from these artisans not only supports local livelihoods but also provides a meaningful souvenir of a trip.

Local Festivals

Khon Kaen’s festivals are a must-visit because they showcase the region’s cultural richness. The Rocket Festival (Bun Bang Fai) is held annually to pray for rain and is an exciting event where massive homemade rockets are launched into the sky. The festival is also a display of traditional music, dance, and community spirit.

For a spiritual experience, tourists should consider participating in the Buddhist Lent Candle Festival, which showcases intricate wax sculptures and candle-lit processions. These festivals offer travellers a chance to engage with locals and understand their way of life. Unlike the highly commercialised events in tourist hotspots, these celebrations retain their authenticity and communal essence.
