Trekking to Kodachadri: Chasing Sunsets in the Western Ghats
Rising 1,343 meters above sea level, this peak offers more than just a climb—it’s a journey through forests, waterfalls, meadows, and myths.

There are treks that test your endurance, and then there are treks that touch your soul. Kodachadri trek, in the heart of Karnataka’s Western Ghats, is one of those rare places where nature and spirituality meet. Rising 1,343 meters above sea level, this peak offers more than just a climb—it’s a journey through forests, waterfalls, meadows, and myths.
The First Steps: Forests and Waterfalls
The trek usually begins from Kattinahole or Nittur village, and right from the start you’re surrounded by dense forests alive with bird calls. The early stretch is a mix of mud paths and streams, shaded by tall trees that keep the sun out. For me, the most thrilling part was reaching Hidlumane Falls midway. To continue, you actually have to climb along the rocks with water rushing beside you. It’s slippery, yes, but the energy of the waterfall and the cold splash on your face makes the challenge worth it.
Once you’re past the falls, the forest slowly gives way to wide meadows where the breeze picks up and the views stretch endlessly. This transition from dark green forests to golden grasslands is one of the highlights of Kodachadri.
The Ridge Walk and the Summit
The last section of the trek is what trekkers talk about the most—the ridge walk. With rolling hills on either side and the Western Ghats stretching to the horizon, it feels like walking on the edge of the world. It’s not too technical, but it does get steep, so a steady pace is your best friend here.
At the summit, the Mookambika Temple greets you. Pilgrims hike up here as an act of devotion, and sharing the trail with them adds a layer of meaning to the trek. If you time it right, the sunset from Kodachadri is one of the most spectacular in the Ghats. Watching the sky turn fiery orange while the valleys fade into the dusk is something I’ll never forget.
Best Time to Go
Kodachadri wears a different look in every season. If you want the safest, most comfortable trek, go between October and February when the skies are clear and the air is cool. The monsoon months (June–September) drench the hills in green and make the waterfalls roar, but leeches and slippery trails are a challenge. Summer (March–May) is manageable but can get hot in the afternoons, so early starts are key.
Reaching Kodachadri
Getting here is part of the adventure. The closest big town is Shimoga, while the nearest railway station is Kundapura. From Bangalore, it’s about 8–9 hours by car or overnight bus. You can also fly into Mangalore Airport (140 km) and hire a cab from there. Most trekkers stay in small homestays around Nittur or Kollur, which also give you a taste of local hospitality and food.
Tips, Safety, and Costs
From my experience, a few tips can make the trek smoother:
Wear shoes with good grip—especially if you’re doing the falls route.
Carry snacks and at least 2 liters of water; shops disappear after the base.
Keep a light jacket handy—it gets windy and chilly at the top.
If you’re new to trekking, consider hiring a local guide—they know the routes better than Google Maps.
On the budget side, a 2-day trek including transport from Bangalore, food, and homestay can cost anywhere between ₹3,500–₹6,000, depending on how you plan it.
Beyond the Trek
If you have an extra day, explore Kollur Mookambika Temple, just 20 km away, or drive to Nagodi village, which is a hidden gem surrounded by forests. For a mix of mountain and sea, Udupi and Murudeshwar beaches are just a few hours away, making a perfect combo trip.
Why Kodachadri is More Than a Trek
For me, Kodachadri wasn’t just about climbing a peak—it was about discovering the layers of the Western Ghats. The sound of rushing waterfalls, the calm of the meadows, the thrill of the ridge walk, and the spiritual silence at the summit together made it unforgettable. It’s a trek that challenges you just enough, but rewards you with memories far greater.
If you’re searching for a trek in Karnataka that offers adventure, natural beauty, and cultural depth, Kodachadri should be high on your list.
