The Trang An Boat Tour

Afloat across the Best-Kept Secrets of Ninh Binh

By Jungle BossPublished about a year ago 5 min read

Located right in the center of Ninh Bình, Trang An Boat Tour surely is a journey into one of Vietnam's most famed UNESCO World Heritage sites, and it is really not overrated as one of the best natural attractions in Vietnam-and for all good reasons.

This is the alluring mix of nature, culture, and history playing out before your eyes as you float down the tranquil rivers meandering their way through limestone karsts and ancient caves. The Trang An boat tour is an absolute must-see, if not the most quintessential representation of what this beautiful country has to offer on any northern Vietnam itinerary.

The Legend of the Trang An

With an area of 6,000 hectares, the river and caves include karst mountains thrusting up into the landscape. This is a place that has had considerable cultural importance, with evidence of early human habitation, religious temples, and sacred pagodas throughout the area for thousands of years.

This region has been a hub since the beginning of Vietnamese history, starting off with the Dinh and the Le dynasty who chose this place for their strategic defense due to its natural fortification. In 2014, Trang An joined the UNESCO list of the most important heritages due to its double primacy: natural beauty and cultural heritage. Sceneries combined with historical meaning, which turns this area into an object to visit for tourists and scholars and amateurs of nature.

Starting Your Tour on Trang An Boats

Here, the Trang An boat tour is sited on the main pier, at which all the visitors were enjoying the traditional sampan boats-typically four persons per boat. Every boat is fitted with oars by the local guides, who are not averse to using both hands and feet in navigating over the waters-a really remarkable feat of skill.

They can handle the boat, but act as an unofficial guided tour-they'll point out bits about the local environment and bits about history as they row through the different stops.

It takes about two to three hours depending on which route. You can take any one of the three routes available. You will be taken up through special points such as temples, caves, or other scenery.

Route number 1 is the longest and most popular-one that takes one through nine caves and along scenic rivers to see several temples. This route includes the highlight of the trip: Hang Toi, otherwise named Dark Cave, which one can reach only by boat.

Day 2 Route: The route is a short route comprising of four caves and fewer temples; therefore, it would be good to go for all those who have less time.

Nature lovers will adore Route 3, since most of the trail will be about flora and fauna: wildlife-packed water caves and valleys.

While all routes are really scenic, Route 1 should be recommended for first-time visitors as it also offers an overall view of Trang An's unique combination of history and landscape.

Highlights of the Trang An Boat Tour

The Limestone Karsts

These are indeed one of the wonders of the earth, huge, towering karst limestone outcrops that have been formed over many millions of years through erosion of the earth's crust. These karsts provide a really stunning back: razor-sharp peaks dramatically rise from the flat river plains. Tall mountains rise in contrast with the gentle water, making a perfect picture which is not quite believable in its beauty.

The Caves

During your cruise, your boat will tour through several caves-most of which can be entered only from the water. These have been formed in the limestone over thousands of years and, with their various shapes and formations, have almost the character of fantasy. Some of the caves are small while others may extend several hundreds of meters in length; you will be obliged to duck in order to allow the boat to go through the narrow places. Among the most famous caves you will find:

Hang Dia Linh: This one is pretty famous for its large-sized stalactites hanging from the roof, making a sort of unreal landscape.

Hang Sinh: One narrow cave, dark and sparkling, goes just at the heart of karstic mountains. Light filtered by nature through the river illuminates in the cave and gives a ghost effect, but it is so beautiful.

Hang Toi: Pitch black inside the cave, with the soft gulps of the oar whenever it hits the water. It is a full moment of serenity and introspection.

Temples and Pagodas

Trang An is not only about nature; it is a spiritual and cultural node as well. Going down the boat trip, a stop to several temples and pagodas would be made, some of which are from a few centuries ago. Still now, there exist religious temples wherein people burn incense sticks and offer sacrifice to gods. The primary temples are:

Trinh Temple: This temple is located right at the entrance of the boat trip, dedicated to the ancient kings who used to rule Vietnam from that region.

Tran Temple: A temple lying in the middle of a quiet valley, reserved for the Tran Dynasty, and thus another reminder of the great history of Vietnam.

Phu Khong Temple: Serene at High Way No. 1, allows reflection and allows the appreciation of beauty that is surrounded.

The Best Time to Visit Trang An

The best time to visit Trang An is during the dry season, which falls between November and April of every year. It boasts a cool climate and has low rainfall. During this period, the river becomes tranquil, the air is fresh, making traveling with boats along it much more comfortable.

But at the same time, the Trang An boat tour is worth visiting all year round, while the rainy season-the period from May to October-has its own magic: green landscapes and fewer tourists.

Eco-friendly Tourism

Trang An is probably among the few places in Vietnam that has retained its natural magnificence despite the mass influx into the area. The local government has made certain that the tourism product developed within the location is both sustainable and eco-friendly. For instance, no motorized boats are used within this area, thus helping retain its serenity. The tourists visiting the site are also called upon to avoid litter as well as respect the culture and the environment.

With ecotourism supporting those like Trang An, it enables travelers to let them continue protecting some of the most valued natural and cultural assets in Vietnam and preserve the pristine landscape for generations to come.

How to Get to Trang An

Trang An sits some 90 km south of Hanoi and is accessible by road. Tourism to this area mainly sits in the nearby city of Ninh Bình, where accommodation options range from the lowly budget hostel to five-star hotels. From Ninh Binh, Trang An is only 15 minutes away by driving. You can also do this as a day trip from Hanoi, but staying overnight in Ninh Bình allows you to make so much more of the outlying attractions, such as Mua Cave Viewpoint and Tam Cốc.
