Betrayal in the Ranks

The journey from the ruins of Vithra led Elara and Kalen through treacherous lands. They crossed arid deserts, windswept plains, and dense, mist-covered forests. Each step brought them closer to the heart of the Shadow Realm, where the Shadow King awaited. But the closer they got, the more the shadows seemed to creep into their minds

It was during one such leg of their journey, through the marshlands known as the Murkwood, that they encountered Lysander. At first glance, Lysander appeared to be nothing more than a wandering rogue—charming, quick-witted, and always with a sly grin on his face. He claimed to know the hidden paths through the Murkwood, paths that would lead them straight to the Shadow Realm without attracting the attention of the dark forces that guarded it

Elara was cautious of him from the start, but Kalen seemed to trust Lysander’s skills. He argued that they couldn’t afford to waste time wandering through the marshes without guidance, and reluctantly, Elara agreed

For days, Lysander led them through the treacherous swamp, always keeping them just out of sight of the shadow creatures that prowled the edges of their vision. His knowledge of the area was undeniable, and slowly, Elara began to lower her guard

But then, one night, as they camped near the edge of the Murkwood, things took a dark turn

Elara had been keeping watch, the crystal clutched in her hand, when she heard a rustling in the bushes. Thinking it was just another wild creature, she paid it little mind, but the sound persisted. She stood, ready to investigate, when she saw a shadowy figure slip into the darkness—Lysander

Suspicion flared in her mind, and she followed him, careful not to make a sound. What she found chilled her to the bone

Lysander was speaking with a group of shadow creatures, their forms barely visible in the darkness. He was offering them something in exchange for safe passage through the Shadow Realm—Elara’s crystal

Fool one of the creatures hissed. The crystal is more than just a tool. It’s a weapon against our kind. You dare to bring it into the Shadow Realm?

Lysander smirked, holding up a hand. Relax. I’ll get it from her soon enough. Just make sure I get what I was promised—power, wealth, whatever I ask for

Elara’s heart pounded in her chest. She had trusted him, and now he was betraying her—for nothing more than greed

Without thinking, she stepped forward, her hand tightening on her dagger. Lysander! she shouted, her voice filled with anger

He spun around, surprise flickering in his eyes. Elara...it’s not what it looks like

But it was exactly what it looked like. Lysander had led them into a trap, and now the shadow creatures were closing in

Kalen, hearing the commotion, rushed to her side, his sword drawn. What’s going on?

Lysander’s betrayed us Elara spat, her eyes never leaving the rogue. He’s been working with the shadows all along

Lysander raised his hands in mock surrender. Now, now let’s not get hasty. This was just a little business arrangement. Nothing personal

Nothing personal? Kalen growled, stepping forward. You sold us out!

Before Lysander could respond, the shadow creatures attacked. Elara and Kalen fought side by side, their blades cutting through the darkness. But the creatures were many, and their strength was overwhelming

In the chaos, Lysander slipped away, disappearing into the shadows. Elara tried to chase him, but the creatures blocked her path, forcing her to focus on the fight

When the battle was over, the creatures vanquished, Lysander was gone

Kalen cursed under his breath. I knew we couldn’t trust him

Elara said nothing, her mind racing. Lysander had gotten away, and with him, their best chance of navigating the Shadow Realm unscathed

But worse than that, she now knew they couldn’t afford to trust anyone. From here on out, they were alone
