Acropolis of Athens

Athens is a city rich in history and breathtaking views. Luckily, you don’t have to spend a fortune to enjoy incredible panoramas. Here are the best free viewpoints in Athens, with one exception: the iconic Acropolis. While the entrance fee is steep at €20, did you know you can admire it perfectly from various free spots around the city?

1. Acropolis of Athens

Though the Acropolis requires a ticket, it’s impossible to leave off this list. From this historic hill, you can enjoy panoramic views of the city, the Aegean Sea, and surrounding mountains. However, if you're only after the view, the entrance fee may not be worth it—there are plenty of free alternatives where you can take in the beauty of Athens. If you do decide to visit, go early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid crowds.

2. Areopagus Hill

Right next to the Acropolis, the Areopagus Hill (Mars Hill) was once used for trials and speeches, including one by Apostle Paul. Today, it offers a stunning view of the Acropolis and the city below. Be careful, as the rocks can be slippery—good shoes are recommended!

3. Lycabettus Hill – The Highest Point in Athens

Standing at 277 meters, Lycabettus Hill is the tallest point in Athens. You can hike up for free via a scenic path or take the cable car. At the summit, you’ll find a small chapel, a café, and breathtaking views stretching to the Aegean Sea. This is one of the best spots to catch a sunset.

A hidden gem loved by locals, Daphne Viewpoint on the western side of the city offers a spectacular view of Athens and the Acropolis, especially at sunset. Unlike many other viewpoints, this one remains peaceful and free from large crowds.

Attican Grove Viewpoint is set in a lush forested area, providing a stunning panorama of Athens while surrounded by nature. It’s a great spot for a relaxing walk and an escape from the city’s hustle. Nearby, Damaria Palaio Psychiko, an old quarry site, has transformed into a scenic area with panoramic views, offering a unique and quiet retreat.

6. Taxiarches Hill

Located outside the city center, Taxiarches Hill offers untouched, sweeping views of Athens and the mountains beyond. Since it’s far from tourist hotspots, you can enjoy the scenery in peace. To get there, take the Green Metro Line (L1) to Kifisia station. From there, take bus 522 or 523 and walk about 2 kilometers to the hill. Keep in mind, the bus only runs once an hour, so plan accordingly.
