Learning to Appreciate Sharks
I think sharks are incredible creatures, truly remarkable. That doesn’t mean I’m not afraid of them. I’d like to think my fear is a healthy one, more grounded than when I was younger. I remember being asked what I was afraid of. Spontaneously I answered, sharks and tidal waves. I had dreams about them both. For a girl who lived in Central Ontario, it seemed highly unlikely I would encounter either. I laughed about my irrational fears when chatting about fears with friends. Then I moved to Miami, Florida and realized that both my childhood irrational fears had become semi-rational ones.

That ship has sailed
'Tick, tick, tock', Stop. The hands of my gold-rimmed pocket watch stops. 6:37 pm and still waiting. I remember when I was gifted this timepiece, a masterpiece of delicate architecture and precision. Its heavy silver baselined beautifully with 24k gold and the faintest detail of a bird engraved perfectly on the side. For thirteen years I have had this watch and for thirteen years it has never stopped.

Progreso, Mexico: Home of the World's Largest Pier
Because it was a late December cruise and the weather was great, we decided to spend our time at our Progreso, Mexico, Port of Call at the beach. We had never been to Progreso before, but the decision to either spend our five hours touring the town or hanging out at the beach was an easy decision for us. It was cold and wet at home and we were in sunny Mexico! From my research, I knew that there was a good beach at the end of the world's longest pier, so little of our limited time would be wasted in transit.

Tropical Snowfall
The pile of plastic toys in the faded stroller was out of place on the empty beach. I had quite literally stumbled upon this tiny stretch of paradise by chance, and I am not proud: I’d snuck down the narrow alley way to pee after having an early brunch of two titanic Bloody Marys. As I squatted there, trying to maintain my balance, I turned my head and was almost blinded by the brilliant blue of the morning sky against the white sand at the other end of the passage.

Caribbean Paradise
I don't know if you've ever been to St John in the USVI. There is debate over the history of St John but it is believed that area was first settled by nomadic hunter/ gatherers and there is a rare pre-historic site that dates back to 770 BC. I consider it truly one of the most beautiful places on earth. I'll admit I haven't been to a tremendous amount of places in my lifetime but of those I have visited none have come even close to the beauty of St John. There are many reasons that St John is so beautiful. The people are beautiful, the island is spectacular and the setting is just idyllic. The beaches are amongst the best in the world and the flora and fauna are awe inspiring in a quiet cozy island style.

Saturday mornings in the Caribbean are not washed in the music of ocean waves. No. They are made of earthquakes. Vibrating windows and cacophony. The lawn have to cut. And the neighbor dog have to bark at the whacker-man cutting the lawn. We don't sleep in here.
