The Love of a Daredevil
I know, I know…who the hell is Dave Munday? In order to answer that question, I will have to go back to my childhood back in the awful, ugly and beautiful 1980s. My family took a trip to Niagara Falls sometime in my early childhood and I marveled at the sight of all that water at that incredible height. I noted the tacky tourist traps everywhere and the endless parade of other tourists who were also trying to remember the moment in their cheap camera poses. I was no better; neither was the family. My one memory of the trip there involves posing for a photo with a cut-out of a barrel and pretending to drop over the Falls with my family (a part of me wonders what happened to that photograph). And I even got a hat there.

The Truth in Ottawa
We departed from Fredericton, New Brunswick tucked neatly into the Freedom Convoy 2022 with a packed vehicle. There was no end to the convoy. After the jam-packed overpass, we settled onto the hard shoulder along with dozens of others waiting for the convoy to depart so we could follow. People followed suit with Canadian flags as far as the eye could see. Honks and waves were constant. This was but a glimpse into the magic unfolding.

Being a True Account of a Return to My Home during the 2022 Winter Holidays
Based on the response to my last piece on a trip to my hometown, a lot of readers were interested in my account of the bus, train and taxi journey, so I have decided to follow it up with material from the other end of things. I spent two very long weeks in my hometown, never venturing downtown – nothing to see except more urban decay, former stores and spots which I used to enjoy now shuttered and abandoned, and the old and continually new problem of homelessness – or even venturing to most of the homes and relatives I had promised myself to patronize. It was not a very festive moment, and I could even feel the lack of zeal in our home. For the first time, my mother decided not to put up the tree or any decorations around the house. We only kept lights on in front to keep up appearances, but it was clear that my stay was just like any other free time in my life when I did not have a holiday to celebrate or work to do. My days were filled with jogging, reading, trips to the mall (surprisingly, a bright spot in all of this and something that might deserve its own piece), too much television surfing, not enough writing, and plans for my return home (I knew things were bad when I decided to pack two days early for the trip back).

I had the best day!
I had the best day today! I went for a twelve kilometer hike along the Trepanier Creek Greenway trail in Peachland BC. I started on the Paradise valley side trail head and hiked six kilometers over a mountain trail which takes you into Peachland BC. You come out at the trail beside the elementary school and you can then walk into the little town of Peachland nestled in the heart of the Okanagan. I stopped and had lunch at the subway at the mall beside the school then I turned around and hiked all the way back. I had the whole trail to myself the whole way in and then out, except for a chipmunk, a crow, a woodpecker and a Golden Eagle.
