Haapsalu Castle

Haapsalu Castle was built in the 13th century. The Medieval cathedral is the best preserved in the region. The ruins of the castle are the venue for the famous White Night Festival celebrating the summer solstice. For thrills the legend of the White Lady is associated with the castle making it shrouded in mystery.
Koulvere Castle

Koulvere Castle was built as an episcopal residence. It became an important refuge during the wars of the 17th century. The castle is located in Lääne County, in western Estonia. Today the castle has been restored and is a venue for private celebrations and events.
Kuresaare Castle

This is an episcopal castle among the best preserved in the Baltic States. It was built in the 14th century and is situated on Saaremaa Island. The castle has passed through many hands including the Livonian Order and the Swedish Empire. It is also associated with the infamous Russian tsar Ivan the Terrible who unsuccessfully tried to capture the fortress. Today it is home to the Saaremaa Museum where visitors can learn about the history of the island and its cultural significance.
Narva Castle

This castle is also known as Hermann Castle. It sits on the banks of the Narva River, bordering Russia. The Danes built the castle in the 13th century and the towering fortress has seen conflicts between Russians, Swedes, and Germans. Among its most notable features is its closeness to ivangord Fortress on the Russian side of the Narva River. Today the castle is home to the Narva Museum where visitors can learn about the history of the city and the border region.
Paide Castle

The ruins of this Medieval fortress are known for the central tower, the "Tower of Time". Once it played a crucial role in defending central Estonis. The tower has been restored and housed an interactive museum where visitors can learn about the history of the city and the role of the castle during wars between Russia, Sweden, and Poland.
Palmse Manor

Palmse Manor is located in northern Estonia. It is a 18th century manor house surrounded by a magnificent estate with sprawling gardens and lovely landscapes. The manor dates back to the 16th century and was transformed into a grande manor house under Swedish ownership in the 17th century. Visitors enjoy viewing the interior with elegant furnishings, elaborate tapestries, and amazing artwork. The on-site museum exhibit artifacts related to the history of the manor and gives visitors a look into the history of Estonia's struggle for independence and development throughout different periods.
Põltsamaa Castle

This castle is a Medieval fortress that was largely destroyed during WW II. Due to its history and surroundings it remains of interest to visitors. Today the castle is home to a winery and a museum for visitors interested in the history and wine culture of Estonia.
Rakvere Castle (Pictured above)
Rakvere Castle was built in the 13th century. The castle hosts Medieval reenactments letting visitors enjoy stepping back into the world of knights, armor, and swords. The castle also features festivals and cultural activities. It is a top tourist attraction.
Toompea Castle

The fortress Toompea sits on Toompea Hill in the Old Town of Tallinn. It has been a symbol of power since the 13th century. The once might fortress is now home to the Estonian Parliament. It served as the administrative center of the Livonian Brothers of the Sword in the Middle Ages. The skyline of the capital of Estonia, Tallinn is dominated by Toompea Castle which is a combination of Gothic and Baroque styles.
Viljandi Castle

You'll find the Viljandi Castle in the Vilhandi region. Viljandi is a medium-sized town near the heart of Estonia and sits almost halfway between the cities of Pärnu and Tartu. Only ruins remain of the castle associated with the power of the Livonian Brothers of the Sword. During the summer this is a venue for several music festivals.

Estonia's castles are fascinating. Haapsalu's White Lady legend adds mystery. Kuresaare has a rich history, and Narva Castle has seen many conflicts. Paide's "Tower of Time" is a must-see.
