Frederiksborg Castle

Amalienborg Palace

Amalienborg Palace is a residence that consists of four identical Rococo-style buildings surrounding a courtyard in Copenhagen, Denmark. It is the main residence of the Royal Family of Denmark. In the courtyard you can see the changing of the guard. There are two times a year you can see the Royal Family they are the Queen’s birthday (April 16) or the Royal Run (June 10).

The castle was built in the 18th century commissioned by King Frederick V. He chose the location near the waterfront for impressive views of the harbor. The castle was named after Queen Sophie Amalie.

Christian VII’s Palace is home to Queen Margrethe II and Prince Henrik, while Christian VIII’s Palace houses Crown Prince Frederik and his family. Christian IX’s Palace showcases exquisite period interiors that reflect Danish design from various eras, and Frederick VIII’s Palace serves as guest quarters for visiting dignitaries.

Amalieborg Palace has a lovely park adjacent to it where visitors can stroll or enjoy nature.

Christianborg Palace

Christianborg Palace sits on the small island of Slotsholmen in Copenhagen. It served as the seat for Danish Kings and Queens for centuries. The palace was built in the 12 th century as a fortress. Today it is the Danish Parliament Building and former Royal Palace.

Visitors can take a tour of the royal reception rooms, enjoy the awesome view from the tower, and explore the ruins beneath the palace dating bak to the 1100s. The palace has been renovatied many times and is the largest Renaissance palace in Scandanavia. King Christian IV transformed it into a lovely Baroque palace.

Dragsholm Castle

Dragsholm Castle is among the oldest castles in Denmark. It is also considered to be one of the most haunted places in Europe and the 800-year-old castle was home to noble prisoners. It was built around 1215 by the Bishop of Roskilde and is located in the north of Zealand.

Today it has become a tourist attraction and is a fine hotel with a restaurant. You'll have plenty of company here since it is home to around 100 different ghosts.

Egerkof Castle

This castle is located on the island of Funen and is an impressive Renaissance castle. It is surrounded by a picturesque moat. Egerkof Castle was built in 1554 by Frands Brockenhuus, a nobleman. The inside of the castle has oppulent halls with tapestries and ornate furnishings.

Among the highlights are the magnificent gardens where visitors can walk and enojy rare plants and lovely flowers.

Frederiksborg Castle (Pictured above)

This castle is situated on three small islets in the Castle Lake in Hillerod. It was built by King Christian IV in the early decades of the 17th century and is the largest Renaissance complex in the Nordic region.

Since 1878 Frederiksborg Castle has housed The Museum of National History, which presents 500 years of Danish history with a collection of portraits, history paintings, furniture and applied art.

The Baroque Garden is not the Castle’s only garden. To the left of the Baroque Garden is the romantic, English-style garden, where the small Bath House Castle is also located.

Gammel Estrup Manor

This is a red-brick Renaissance manor house located east of Randers in Jutland, Denmark. The manor has been a museum since 1930. The museum shows the development of Danish nobility through the ages and the rooms are furnished as they were in past centuries.

Hammerhush Castle

This castle is located on the picturesque island of Bornholm. It is one of the best-preserved Medieval fortresses in Denmark. Hammerhush Castle stands atop towereing cliffs overlooking the Baltic Sea.

Visitors to the castle can get impressive views of the coastline and surrounding Bornholm. South of the castle is a deep valley, water-filled hollows, and dense forest. The castle was built with box-like rooms surrounded by rings of fortifications. Each provided an additional layer of protection from invaders. Two natural spring ponds provided fresh drinking water on the side of the castle.

Koldinghus Castle

Koldinghus Castle is the largest Renaissance castle in Scandinavia. It served as a Medieval fortress and in 1809 after a fire was restored and became a museum. Visitors can see Flora Danica porcelain and try on historical costumes in the Royal Dressing Workshop. For awesome views climb the mighty tower of Christian IV. You can enjoy dining in the Madekaelderen Restaurant.

Kronborg Castle

Kronborg Castle is located in the charming town of Helsingør, also known as Elsinore. The castle's claim to fame is that it was the home of Shakespeare's Hamlet. It is Denmark's most famous castle dating back to the 1600s when Shakespeare wrote his play. In 2000, Kronborg Castle became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can get a guided tour.

Visitors can explore the crypts and catacombs beneath the castle. There you can meet Holger the Dane an imposing stone statue. Holger the Dane is a legendary figure in Danish culture. If Denmark is ever in trouble, he’ll wake from his rock throne under Helsingør and defend her.

The Shakespeare Festival takes place here every summer.

Ledreborg Castle

This castle is located in Lejre, Denmark. It is a Baroque castle built in the 18th century. Ledreborg Castle stands at the end of the longest avenue in Denmark, Ledreborg Alle and is surrounded by a lovely Baroque style park. The castle is a venue for conferences, meetings, parties, activitivities, and events.

Guided tours are available during the summer. You can explore the lovely halls, the old kitchen, and dungeon. The main building has a unique collection of original furniture and paintings.

Rosenborg Castle

This castle was built in the early 17th century by King Christian IV. In the basement of this castle you will enjoy seeing the Crown Jewels and Royal Regalia of Denmark. The rooms are filled with lavish portraits. The highlights are the Knight's Hall with coronation thrones and tapestries on the wall commemorating battles between Denmark and Sweden.It is surrounded by the King's Garden.

Valdemar’s Castle

This castle is located on the island of Tasinge. It is surrounded by forest and beach and rich with wildlife. Valdemar's Castle was built by Christian IV.It is owned by the Danish naval hero Niels Juel. Today, it is Denmark's largest private home – and the only former royal castle in private hands.

This year 2025 the castle will be a venue for art with the portrais of the castle meeting with Contemporary artworks. From May to September 2025, visitors can experience an interdisciplinary programme of exhibitions, performances, and events.

Voergaard Castle

Voergaard Castle is located in Drottninglund, in northeastern Denmark.The castle is a moated Renaissance manor house l It houses artworks by Goya, Rubens, and Raphael, as well as furniture belongining to both Louis XIV and Louis XVI. The castle is surrounded by a large French-style park.
