Abbington is a lovely town located in the Blue Ridge Mountains with a quaint historic district. The district has some outstanding historic buildings dating back to the Antebellum period.

The William King Museum of Art is a visual arts and cultural heritage museum.

The northern trailhead, Abbington Muster Grounds, is the start of the Overmountain Victory Trail, a National Historic Trail. The trail stretches across four states, among them Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

South Holsten Lake offers visitors boating, fishing, and swimming.

The beautiful small town of Chincoteague is located on the Island of Chincoteague.

It is the gateway to Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge on Assateague Island. It is home to wild horses with two bands of horses, one on Virginia’s side and one on Maryland’s side. You can enjoy lighthouses and nature trails as well as boating and kayaking.

For history lovers, there is the Museum of Chincoteague Island, with the history of the people, culture, and heritage preserved.

The Captain Timothy Hill House is an 1800s historic home.

In a charming setting by the Chesapeake Bay is Kilmarnock. The town has art galleries and an arts and antique shop.

The Kilmarnock Museum is among the oldest buildings in town. It preserves the history of the town and hosts community events.

Hughlett Point Natural Area Preserve is the winter home for migrating waterfowl and other bird species. You can hike on trails or along the boardwalk.

Baylor Park Nature Trail stretches along Norris Pond. The trail is part of the birding and wildlife trail systems in Virginia.

In Rockbridge County, you’ll find Lexington offering amazing views of the Shenandoah Valley. The Blue Ridge Mountains and the valley provide this small town with outdoor recreation.

Main Street in downtown Lexington offers unique shopping opportunities.

The Chessie Nature Trail runs along the Murray River, linking Buena Vista with Lexington. The trail takes hikers through forest, along river, and views of rock formations.

The Jackson House Museum is housed in the former home of Stonewall Jackson, general of the Confederate Army in the American Civil War. The house highlights his life and achievements.

Nestled in the Shenandoah Valley is Luray. The town offer opportunities for outdoor recreation.

Nearby is the Shenandoah National Park with outdoor activities like hiking, biking, and backcountry camping, as well as nighttime stargazing.

The Shenandoah River is for those who love canoeing, kayaking, and rafting.

Visit the Luray Caverns with attractions like the Stalacpipe organ and singing tower.

Skyline Drive follows the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains with amazing scenery.

The small town of Onancock is located in the center of the Eastern Shore with Victorian-era homes and tree-lined streets.

Waterman’s Museum and Research Center teaches visitors about maritime history.

The Samuel D. Outlaw Blacksmith Shop is a museum that preserves the legacy of Outlaws.

Enjoy an overnight stay at the Inn at Onancock, a quaint bed and breakfast.

Smithfield offers outdoor recreation along the James River, like kayaking, canoeing, and swimming.

Windsor Castle Park has both hiking and biking trails. You can find fishing spots along the pier. Visitors enjoy picnicking at one of the picnic sites.

Within the park is the historic manor house.

Smithfield has one of the best historic districts in Virginia with the 1750 Isle of Wight Courthouse museum. For art lovers, there is the Arts Center and the Painted Garden Gallery.

The town is also home to Smithfield Ham.

Among the best of the Mid-Atlantic towns, Staunton has the best main street, Beverly Street, with charming and quaint shops.

Betsy Bell Wilderness Park offers hikers beautiful forested mountain terrain with amazing scenic views. You can find different trails and picnic spots.

Gypsy Hill Park is a recreation park in the center of town.

Montgomery Hall Park is a lovely community park with trails, sports fields, a pool, BBQ grills, and picnic tables.

History lovers will enjoy the Wharf Area Historic District.

The Frontier Culture Museum is an open-air museum with costumed historical interpreters.
