Santiago de Querétaro (Spanish pronunciation: [sanˈtjaɣo ðe keˈɾetaɾo]; Otomi: Dähnini Maxei), known simply as Querétaro City (Spanish: Ciudad de Querétaro), is the capital and largest city of the state of Querétaro, located in central Mexico. It is part of the macroregion of Bajío.[2] It is 213 kilometers (132 mi) northwest of Mexico City, 63 kilometers (39 mi) southeast of San Miguel de Allende and 200 kilometers (120 mi) south of San Luis Potosí.[3] The city of Querétaro is divided into seven boroughs: Josefa Vergara y Hernández, Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Centro Histórico, Cayetano Rubio, Santa Rosa Jáuregui, Félix Osores Sotomayor and Epigmenio González. In 1996, the historic center of Querétaro was declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO.

Santiago de Querétaro (or just Querétaro, as it’s commonly referred to ) is apparently the safest city with the highest quality of life in Mexico. I did not know that at the time of my son’s work assignment there. When he first went there he was just curious what it would be like in Mexico. His friend who had moved there and works there had such high praises for the city and the indigenous Mexican communities there.

My son’s first stay in Queretaro was supposed to be for 3 weeks and ended up for the full 6 months. In fact, he found his special someone while he was there. He returned home and decided he was moving to Mexico for good. So he stayed home for 3 months and then headed back with a residency visa , a new work assignment and a car full of his belongings.

The quality of life in Queretaro is what piques the interest of many travelers. The weather is a huge bonus as it’s almost always summer there. Aside from a few weeks of extreme heat and some cold mornings, it’s the perfect all year place.

I highly recommend the next time you’re traveling in Mexico to stop in to Queretaro. Spend the day in the city reminiscent of colonial times, enjoy breathtaking wineries and taking tours of archeological sites.

Whether moving there or visiting, one thing is for sure you’ll want to return with more time. Time seems endless when looking at the breathtaking views of nearby mountains and there’s even hot springs not far.

Queretaro Mexico is a hidden gem and it’s population is quickly expanding, students coming from afar and retirees making it their forever home. It’s no wonder why the historical center of Querétaro was declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO.
