Netravati Trek – A Journey Through the Heart of Western Ghats
I recently completed it and wanted to share my experience, tips, and everything you need to plan your own trek.

If you’re looking for a trek that combines lush forests, river valleys, and a touch of adventure without being overly crowded, the Netravati Trek in Karnataka is a hidden gem. Nestled in the Western Ghats, this trek is perfect for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and those looking to escape city life for a weekend. I recently completed it and wanted to share my experience, tips, and everything you need to plan your own trek.
Why Netravati Trek?
Unlike popular treks that can feel commercialized, Netravati offers a raw, untouched experience. The trail winds through dense forests, spice plantations, and the serene Netravati River valley. You’ll pass small streams, rolling hills, and occasionally spot wildlife like monkeys, birds, and colorful butterflies. The trek is moderate in difficulty, making it suitable for beginners and experienced trekkers alike.
One of the best parts is the feeling of solitude. During my trek, the forest seemed almost untouched, with only the sounds of rustling leaves and flowing water accompanying us. It’s the kind of trek that makes you forget the world outside and just enjoy the rhythm of nature.
The Trekking Route and Highlights
The trek typically starts from a base village near Kukke Subramanya, though there are multiple starting points depending on the organizer. The first few kilometers are through spice plantations — cardamom and pepper vines everywhere — followed by denser forest paths.
Some key highlights include:
Netravati River Viewpoints: Perfect spots to pause, relax, and click pictures.
Waterfalls and Streams: Several small cascades along the way make refreshing stops.
Sunrise/Sunset Views: If you start early, the morning mist over the hills is magical.
The trek usually takes 1–2 days, with an overnight camping option for those wanting a more immersive experience. Camping near the river under the stars was one of the most memorable parts for me — nothing beats the sound of flowing water as you fall asleep.
Best Time to Visit and Weather Tips
The ideal time for the Netravati Trek is between October and May. Post-monsoon (October–December) is especially beautiful because the forests are lush and rivers are full, but the trails can be slippery, so caution is needed. Avoid trekking during peak monsoon months as the paths become muddy and risky.
Wear comfortable trekking shoes, light clothing, and carry rain gear if you’re trekking just after the rains. A small backpack with water, snacks, and a first-aid kit is sufficient for this trek.
How to Reach and Local Tips
The base village is accessible via Mangalore or Subramanya, both well-connected by bus and train. Hiring a local guide is recommended for safety and to navigate the trails easily. Most guides also arrange camping, meals, and cooking facilities if you choose the overnight option.
A few tips from my experience:
Start early to avoid trekking in the afternoon heat.
Carry reusable water bottles and snacks; avoid littering.
Respect local villages and communities; many trails pass through private lands.
Why You Should Do Netravati Trek
The Netravati Trek isn’t just about physical activity — it’s a journey into tranquility. It combines moderate adventure, breathtaking natural scenery, and cultural immersion, all within a compact timeframe. Unlike overcrowded treks, it offers solitude, the charm of unspoiled forests, and memories that stay long after you return.
If you’re planning a weekend getaway or a short trekking expedition from Bangalore or Mangalore, Netravati is a trek worth experiencing — scenic, serene, and full of nature’s surprises.
