Ha Giang loop in Vietnam

The Ha Giang Loop is a famous motorbike loop in far northern Vietnam. This rugged 350 km circuit winds through the Dong Van Karst Plateau Geopark (Vietnam’s first UNESCO Global Geopark) and remote mountain passes. Adventurous travelers describe the landscapes as “jaw-dropping” -with emerald rice terraces, jagged limestone peaks and colorful hill-tribe villages at every turn.
Getting to Ha Giang
Most riders start from Ha Giang city. The usual way to reach Ha Giang is by bus or van from Hanoi. Several shuttle and sleeper buses leave Hanoi daily (the trip takes about 6-8 hours) and cost roughly VND250,000-300,000 (≈$10-$15).

There is no train or airport in Ha Giang Province, so buses are the main option. For a true adventure you can also ride a motorbike from Hanoi (about 300 km, ~8–10 hours), but be aware you must have a valid motorcycle license and international permit.
Ha Giang Loop Itinerary and Highlights
The loop is typically done in 3 to 4 days, though some riders take longer. A common itinerary is:
Day 1: Ha Giang → Dong Van (via Quan Ba and Yen Minh). Stop at Quan Ba “Heaven’s Gate” (1,500 m) for panoramic views over terraced fields.
Day 2: Dong Van → Meo Vac (via Mã Pí Lèng Pass). Cross Mã Pí Lèng Pass for one of Vietnam’s most dramatic vistas above the deep Nho Que River canyon.
Day 3: Meo Vac → Ha Giang (via Du Gia). Detour to Du Gia Waterfall for a refreshing swim in a jungle pool, then return through Yen Minh.
Along the way you’ll hit many iconic spots. Highlights include the ethnic Lung Tam weaving village and the limestone Lung Khuy cave. The old Hmong town of Dong Van offers an atmospheric ancient quarter and a lively Sunday market.
Endless rice terraces and valley views (like those around Thon Tha village) make every turn scenic.

Top highlights: Quan Ba Heaven Gate (gateway to the UNESCO Plateau); Lung Tam Hmong village; Dong Van Old Quarter and market; Mã Pí Lèng Pass and Nho Que Canyon; and Du Gia Waterfall.
Rice terraces are a hallmark of the Ha Giang countryside. The loop’s route through emerald paddy fields adds to its postcard-perfect appeal.
Travel Tips and Safety
Best time: Spring (Mar–May) and autumn (Sept–Oct) are ideal. You’ll enjoy mild, sunny days and lush (or golden) scenery. Summers bring heavy rain and occasional landslides, and winters can be very cold at altitude.
Bike rental: Choose a reliable motorcycle with good brakes and lights. Inspect it before departure. Fill your tank often (petrol is available at small stations along the loop).
Permits and license: Vietnam requires an international driving license for motorcycles. Police checkpoints enforce helmet use and licenses. If you plan to cross into border areas (like Lũng Cú), a special travel permit is sometimes required (tour groups usually handle this).
Ride safe: The roads are steep, narrow and sometimes unpaved, with few guardrails. Always wear a helmet and drive cautiously. Keep distances between vehicles, especially on blind corners. Carry travel insurance and first-aid supplies. Be prepared for sudden weather changes and take breaks when needed.
Local guide: If you’re not an expert rider, consider hiring an “easy rider” or joining a guided tour. Local riders know the routes, can communicate with homestays, and help fix mechanical issues.
Practical information: Plan your stops: accommodations are basic (homestays/guesthouses), so book ahead in high season. Bring cash and snacks (ATMs are rare). Pack warm clothes and a rain jacket for mountain weather.

With proper preparation, the Ha Giang Loop can be a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Its blend of epic scenery, cultural encounters and off-the-beaten-path thrills makes it a must do Vietnam itinerary. For adventurous backpackers and solo travelers, the Ha Giang Loop is an unforgettable off-the-beaten-path experience.
