Between Two Small Towns
What makes Surry County so special to me, you ask? I can tell you that there are many reasons why this county is so special to me. For one, I grew up here and have lived in this area since I was born. I have seen many businesses come and go and seen improvements to Surry County as time marches on. Two special towns come to mind living in Surry County and those are Mount Airy and Pilot Mountain. Growing up, I have always loved the outdoors. I would roam and play in the woods, spending as much time as I could outdoors. Mount Airy and Pilot Mountain have beautiful outdoor parks. Although having outdoor parks is one special thing, but there are so many other things when living between these two towns.

Skinning 25 Short
I hurried to heave off my layers. It was not the most ideal situation considering that it was 18 below zero also known as 50 degrees below freezing. I was stripping down to just my thin long sleeve because I had to put on my beacon. I wasn’t cold yet but I could feel the cold air creeping into my warm skin. It was kissing my nose and hands and turning them red and purple. My beacon beeped twice to show that it was ready and transmitting a signal. My layers were lying on the ground. I rushed to pull them over, hoping I wouldn’t freeze. I didn’t. First my sweatshirt, then a lime green puffy, and lastly my heavy ski jacket. Zipping up my jacket, I felt the cold air get one last nip and pulling on my smoky mustard gloves.

Volcanic Craters and Tea Fields
I stared at the hissing lake, a gray greenish color, spewing blasts of sulfur into the sky. It smelled distinctly like rotten eggs. The crater lake bubbled and roared. It was a scene straight out of Mordor in Lord of the Rings. However, instead of evil rings and dark wraiths, this Mordor was filled with tourists and small buses. People chatted happily as they began the trek around the lake. Nema and I opted to take the quieter path that led around the side of the volcano. As we moved away from the crater, the greenery enveloped us, a direct contrast to the bare mountain and seething lake.
