The Plane Trip
Our classroom was the 3rd one to be called up to go through the metal detector and get our luggage checked by security. I breathed in and slowly breathed out; just the thought of leaving the solid ground in a plane made me slightly queasy. Two lines down I heard BEEP BEEP BEEP, one of the alarms must have gone off. A few people including me covered our ears with our hands to block out the loud noise the machine made. There was no serious reason the detector went off, it was just a kid that was not with us trying to sneak his phone with him, I’m guessing his parents got mad at him and told him he lost his phone privileges or something around that topic.

Mykonos 101: What You Might Not Expect On Holiday
Now of course, it goes without saying that Mykonos holds beautiful beaches, amazing food and picturesque views, as after all, this is Greece we’re talking about. Mykonos is famously known for its painted white walls that make every street corner “Instagram-worthy”. You’d find it a stretch not to take hundreds of pictures of the commonly themed, blue or red door houses, or the brightly coloured flowers, beautifully framing someone’s front door steps.

Unhappy Camper
I have a theory. There are many things in life that we would regard a hundred years ago as genuine torture, if you asked most people if they would like to be submerged into sub zero temperature water with no guarantee that they could get out, or if they would like to run for miles and miles to the point of vomiting, they would probably look at you like you’d just said that you were an Instagram influencer on a first date. However ice swimming and marathon running are two tried and tested pastimes that our modern society deems leisurely. And this is my issue with something I have been told to enjoy my entire life as I’m sure many of you have, camping.

An Improbable Guide to Survival cont.
Landing at Tambo airport was surreal in the sense that it was completely ordinary and yet my mindset instantly shifted on arrival – as if I was an Alien about to explore new terrain. All the anxiety I had been feeling had been building up to this moment. Strikingly opposed to the lack of physical preparation I’d conducted, I’d been mentally preparing myself for weeks. I could feel myself on edge. Observing more closely, more consciously, every movement that disturbed the air. I hate the feeling that I’m overreacting in any given situation – I might not always succeed but I like to at least try to keep a level head on my shoulders – but my instincts insisted, from all the information I had about staying safe in this country, that my awareness heightening ten to the dozen was necessary.

An Improbable Guide to Survival
It’s so hard to say where this story began, or should begin. To explain why I would drop a stable/happy life for the unknown, I first have to explain why it wasn’t so stable/happy and that takes this story way back to New Year 2019. Maybe I don’t explain the why for now and just explain the what. What the hell is all this nonsensical rambling about?
