Down to the Roots
I took this photo while taking a tour of the Mayan temples of Chacchoben in Mexico. The tour guide spoke about the history of the Mayan temples and what they were used for. There were about five temples that have been found so far. There were some hills around us that he pointed out, which in fact were not hills, but have been speculated to be former Mayan ruins that have been buried and taken over by nature. Each area had its purpose, one area that we stood in was once a marketplace, and many of the other places were used for different social gatherings such as ritual sacrifices and other ceremonies. The location in the photo was where one of those social gathering was held. What fascinated me the most with this one location is that it shows how much mother nature has taken over what was once a civilization, since everywhere I looked there were trees reclaiming the land.

Amazing Journeys: The Mae Hong Son Loop - Thailand
The north of Thailand has a charm like no other part of the country. Most people holidaying here will flock to the islands and beaches of the central and southern regions but I enjoy the north just as much; for its culture, nature and epic scenery. These aspects I appreciated most the last time I visited this region at the very end of last year. I'd heard about a driving route that comes out of Chiang Mai and into the gorgeous surrounding mountains and loops back into Chiang Mai from the north, the full loop being around 600km of tarmac (and sometimes dirt and dust). Once I'd heard about this I simply had to go and do it for myself as I love being on the open road driving through beautiful mountain scenery, and that's exactly what this trip was! The first time I learnt to drive a motorbike, or scooter rather, was in Chiang Mai the previous year so I was slightly familiar with the place. So I convinced a friend of mine from school to come on this trip with me and spend about 5-6 days driving through the beautiful rural mountains of northern Thailand. Even though he hadn't driven a scooter before he decided to come and do it, and because we're both such excellent drivers we both returned in one piece with not even so much as a scratch.

Early Morning Mist On A Mirrored Pond
If you want to get a dawn shot in northern Vermont close to the summer solstice, you have to get up early. This shot taken minutes before 6 AM on the 14th of June illustrates that point. The thick mists that can attend an early morning pre-dawn fishing trip or Kayak paddle are still crisply visible, the sun is already starting to climb for the day, not yet high enough to lend its light to the trees and hills in the background of the photo. Instead, it casts them as back-lit silhouettes, standing behind a mirrored pond that is already showing its color but still clinging to early morning mists that attend the march from night to day. The sun is just high enough to paint the sky a bright blue and reveal puffy clouds which will all appear white as the sun reaches a high enough point in the sky. As with most outdoor shots with limited processing, this photo tells a story of lighting in a natural world. A sun behind clouds sets them aglow and casts its light at the precise angle to make the pond's surface a near perfect mirror.

Season's Beauty
It was a cold Winter evening when I discovered the sun setting under an old stone bridge in Mountain View, Arkansas. Not only did the timing of the evening play a role, but the celestial timing set the sun's placement just right. To get the shot, I needed to get into the water. Yes, it was cold, very cold, but I couldn't resist. I had visited this bridge several times during the summer but its placement in a gully makes for seeing the sun set in the evening impossible. However, with the Winter trees shedding their leaves, this rare shot came to fruition. Over the course of the remaining Winter months, I found this photo inspiring. In what normally was a cold and dreary day, the timing of the sun's setting under the bridge was a warm reminder that beauty can be found anywhere as long as your heart is willing to look for it.

Walking in Mandela's Footsteps
I find traveling liberating. It broadens the mind while relaxing and rejuvenating the soul. The destination is not important; it is the journey that matters. I have toured my backyard as well as places abroad with my husband and children as my companions.

From Sea to Shining Sea
Growing up, I've found that I seem to have traveled noticeably less than many of my peers. By the time I graduated high school, I had only left my home state of Colorado 3 times. The first was for a Taekwondo world championship in Little Rock Arkansas, the second for a Taekwondo weapons training seminar in San Francisco California, and the third was to test for my 4th degree black belt in Las Vegas Nevada. At all three events, I met people not just from across our great nation, but from Europe and South America as well. I couldn't even compare!
